Brief Description of the Master’s Program:
The Master’s program is focused on the project-oriented activity (Applied Master’s program – the Program). The volume and content of the Program comply with the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standards (FSES) of higher education for program 010900.62 Applied Mathematics and Physics (Master’s Degree), as approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, dated March 6, 2014, # 171.
The purpose of the Program is to train highly qualified specialists within the following areas: Photonics, Diffractive Nanophotonics, Nanooptics and Diffractive Optics.
Areas of the professional activity for graduates with the Master’s Degree include:
- Optics and Light Emitting Devices (LEDs) ;
- Diffractive Optics and Nanophotonics;
- Microoptics and Nanooptics;
- Photonic Crystals.
The training is conducted in accordance with basic and individual training programs, including the possibility of taking a crash course of training.
The Program boasts the following features:
- High academic mobility of students (an opportunity of studying on joint programs with leading universities of Russia and Europe);
- An opportunity to do the internship at leading enterprises and research centers of Russia (e.g. Image Processing Systems Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences);
- An extensive use of interactive methods of training and distance education systems.

Professional skills:
After successfully completing the Program, the graduate acquires a set of professional skills, including
- the ability to use the state-of-the-art commercial software for professional objectives, such as OSLO - TracePro, FRED Software, FullWAVE FDTD Software, Mode Solvers – Waveguide CAD Software – FIMMWAVE ;
- knowledge of a foreign language as a mean of professional communication;
- knowledge of methods for solving inverse problems of the theory of diffractions;
- knowledge of methods for design of diffractive optical elements;
- information technologies in aircraft designing, including algorithmic languages and programming techniques for high-level languages;
- use of methods of parallel programming for solving problems in photonics;
- numerical methods for solving differential equations in optics: Maxwell’s and Helmholtz equations;
- methods of photo- and electron-beam lithography for creation of photonics components;
- skills in operating an electron microscope, a near-field scanning optical microscope, a scanning probe microscope;
- skills in operating a fabrication unit for synthesis of 3D photonics components using two-photon polymerization;
The acquired skills provide the graduate’s with basics for the formation of general cultural and professional competences envisaged by the federal state educational standard (FSES).

The field of professional activity:
Fields of professional activity of the graduates include the areas of science, engineering and technologies related to research, design, and manufacturing of the photonics components, including the products’ life-cycle management.
A graduate, who has successfully completed the Program, is assumed to be prepared for the following professional activities:
- Design of optical components for LEDs;
- Design of diffractive optical elements (DOEs);
- Scientific research in Photonics;
- Organization and management.
While studying on the Master’s program in compliance with a basic curriculum, the specialization is attained through studying subjects by student's choice, on individual programs, during practical and research work of students, and based on the chosen topic of the final qualifying work.
Training on an individual curriculum is generally carried out in close cooperation with an enterprise – which may offer a potential work placement of the graduate, whereas the intensive training of students may allow them to continue the post-graduate studies (for a post-graduate degree).

Employment opportunities:
Currently, enterprises of Photonic industry in Russia are experiencing an acute shortage of specialists with all levels of skills in the field of Applied Mathematics and Physics. Over the years, these needs have not been satisfied in full.
Practical experience shows that the University graduates, especially those with Master’s Degree, have nearly guaranteed employment opportunities at the enterprises of the Samara and Volga Region aerospace cluster, as well as at Samara State Aerospace University and Image Processing Systems Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and many other successful companies and industries.
