SSAU develops cooperation with the world's leading technology corporations

21.01.2015, 09:29

Representatives of Samara State Aerospace University and the company Alcoa summed up the first phase of the joint research and educational programs. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the steel corporation in Pittsburgh (USA).

The first contracts for the development of technologies and equipment are made between SSAU and Alcoa in September 2014.

At the request of the company, Samara State Aerospace University conducts research in the field of magnetic-pulse technology of cutting, forming and assembly, as well as creates a magnetic pulse installation that will be used in production.

Results of the initial phase of this work were summarized in the headquarters of Alcoa in Pittsburgh.

A delegation of the university representatives came to the USA. It consisted of the scientists from the research laboratory of advanced technological processes of plastic deformation Professor Vladimir Gluschenkov and Senior Research Fellows Dmitriy Chernikov and Irina Belyaeva.

The presentation of the first results of the project was attended by Raymond Kilmer, Vice President and Technical Director of Alcoa, divisional managers and key employees of scientific and technological centre of the company.

The presentation made by members of the Samara delegation covered all stages of the contracts implementation: from the team formation to the scientific and technical aspects of material testing and modelling of the processes of magnetic-pulse processing.

Summarizing the discussion, Raymond Kilmer said that all the activities carried out under the contracts are made in full and with good quality.

"Your work is sufficiently complete and performed at such high level, that we do not have any comments or additions," - said the Vice-President of Alcoa.

SSAU students participate in the implementation of each project under the contracts terms.
The youth team includes Masters of Engineering and Technical Faculty and Radio Engineering Faculty, as well as several young scientists.

Subjects of the works, which formed the basis of final Master's theses, are related to the researches covered by the contracts: the issues of creating equipment with the parameters that provide the possibility of deformation of thin-walled workpieces and the issues of shaping and, processes simulation.

Raymond Kilmer pointed out creativity of Samara students and young scientists.

Commissioned by Alcoa, SSAU specialists have developed and implemented an educational program on the specialists training in the field of magnetic-pulse metal treatment.

Currently the contract is made on training of six Masters students of the university in this field. Upon the training end, Alcoa guarantees their employment in its enterprises. The future employers have taken the payment of special courses as well as English language courses. Two of the best students from the group will go on an internship in Pittsburgh.

For reference:
SSAU is one of the world leaders in the field of magnetic-pulse metal treatment (MPMT). This technology allows producing the parts of complex shapes that cannot be obtained by conventional methods of forming. The university has established a specialized Research and Development Centre of Magnetic Pulse Technology.

According to results of the research, conducted by the leading Russian rating agency "Expert RA", Samara State Aerospace University entered the top twenty national universities by the graduates being in demand by employers. The Engineers having SSAU diplomas are employed by the companies such as BOSCH, Renault, Nissan, Bombardier, Boeing, Snecma, National Instruments and Schneider Electric.
