A well-known scientist in the field of quantum chemistry Aleksandr Mebel visited SSAU

Professor of the Biochemistry Faculty of Florida International University (Miami, USA), a well-known scientist in the field of quantum chemistry Aleksandr Moiseevich Mebel visited SSAU in the middle of December.

In his works the scientist considers the structure and properties of chemical compounds, reactivity, kinetics and mechanism of chemical reactions on the basis of quantum mechanics.

During his stay in Samara State Aerospace University Professor Mebel took part in the scientific seminar, where he delivered a lecture on "Theoretical studies of the synthesis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in flames and low temperatures".

In his speech he talked about the results of scientific research on the mechanisms of formation and growth of PAHs in environments containing hydrocarbons.

Wide interest to PAH is formed due to the fact that the mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds in hydrocarbon flames are formed in different energy systems.

The author theoretically substantiates new mechanisms of PAH in the initiating stage, using sophisticated quantum mechanical calculations.

SSAU scientists expressed interest in the researchers conducted in the laboratory of Professor Mebel, as he received the new data showing the ways to reduce PAH in aircraft engines emission.

The audience of the research seminar also heard with interest the results of his studies on the mechanisms of formation and growth of complex hydrocarbons and nitrogen molecules in a low-temperature atmosphere of Titan, Saturn's moon.

This work helps us to understand the chemical evolution of the Solar system, the origin of organic fogs on Titan, other planetary atmospheres and moons and in the interstellar space.

In addition, in his lectures in SSAU Aleksandr Mebel told about modern methods of quantum chemistry, provides accurate information about the geometric and electronic structure of molecules, the relative energies of the intermediate states and reaction products.

These methods allow predicting the mechanisms of chemical reactions in a variety of conditions, from super cold interstellar space and to the hot flames.

During the visit of Professor Mebel an agreement was reached to conduct joint research with SSAU scientists (Department of Physics, REC "Physics of nonequilibrium open systems" and REC gas-dynamic studies) and Samara Branch of the Physical Institute named after P. N. Lebedev.

Agreement was also reached on the organization of training for SSAU undergraduate and graduate students in the laboratory of the leading scientist in the USA.
