SSAU will create sandwich materials

18.06.2014, 10:17

On June 11 Heinz Palkovski, Director of Institute of Metallurgy from Germany conducted a lecture on “Preparation, testing and use of sandwich materials”.

Development of this type of materials is currently one of the most promising areas in the field of materials science. The very same material is a sandwich, where the base and the filler arranged in layers of a certain thickness. Professor in his laboratory makes research of the layered composite materials, where there is a polymer layer between two metal layers. The thickness of these layers and materials are selected depending on the conditions in which our material will work. Thus, different layers do not move relative to each other and not peeled off; The result is that material is not destroyed.

Professor Heinz Palkovski is currently engaged in research of sandwich materials and his lecture was devoted to this theme.
This material is very advantageous, since the combination of different bases and fillers allow us to make the material much easier than their counterparts without losing of mechanical properties (and sometimes with improvements). Currently sandwich materials are used in car industry and shipbuilding, as well as occupy a niche in the aerospace industry.
Moreover, once the laminate is easier and, as already stated, is not inferior to the mechanical properties of pure materials from which it is made, and then it is cheaper to produce. Thus, production energy and resources of sandwich material are expended much less. Also emissions are reduced while reducing the production amount; it helps to save the environment. So such materials are much better and more advantageous not only from the technological and structural point of view, but from an economic and environmental side.
What is interesting, but skin and bones are composed of layers in the human body. Therefore sandwich material is researched extensively from the viewpoint of biomedicine. It will be able to help people in skin and bones rebuilding.
The lecture by Professor Heinz Palkovski affected the growing area of materials science; he outlined the main advantages available and the development of this promising material.
Mikhail Viktorovich Khardin, Dean of the 4th Faculty said: “These materials have very high prospects exactly in the aviation industry. We invited the Professors, because we are planning to develop such materials for the aerospace sphere together with our colleague from Germany. Our task is to use aluminium and lithium composites as layers widely used in aviation”.

Various educational projects were also discussed at a meeting with V. D. Bogatyryov, Vice-Rector for International and Educational Activities, in which SSAU hopes to participate in cooperation with Klaustad Technical University.
