Kirill Larin told SSAU an optical imaging of biological tissues

On June 10 Kirill Larin, professor of University of Houston, Director of the Laboratory of Biomedical Optics conducted a lecture in the scientific block of SSAU. He introduced Samara students and scientists with the basic concepts and research methods in biophotonics. It is a science which is at the intersection of biology and optics, it has a great potential and a vast scope of applications.



Kirill Larin told about the fundamentals of interaction of light with biological objects. He emphasized the optical imaging techniques and diagnostics of biological tissues in his presentation.

The lecture presented the following methods:
- confocal microscopy, which allows you to look “under the tissue”;
- optical coherence tomography - ultrasound analogue with a higher resolution;
- elastography - a promising method of contactless diagnostics.

Professor highlighted a wide range of tasks in optical imaging of heart, brain and other organs. These problems are to be solved only in the future. Department of Laser and bioengineering Systems of SSAU in close collaboration with the Laboratory of Biomedical Optics in University of Houston are going to work in this direction rather than anywhere else.
