KUTAIS

Chondrite H5
Fall, November 28, 1977
Russia, Krasnodarsk region
One stone weighing 23 g

This is the smallest meteorite fall recovered on the territory of the USSR.

At eight in the morning, L. Kornienko, a resident of Kutais, was preparing to head home after working the night shift. She delayed briefly to explain something to her relief, M. Eremenko. Suddenly she heard a lound noise and whistle and a stone fell on a path near the two women. The stone made a hole 5 cm deep in the soft soil. Kornienko immediately picked up the stone and noticed that it was still warm and had an unusual smell.

Kornienko gave the stone to her son Alexander, a 10th grade student, and he brought it to the Principal of his school, Mr. L. Obraztsov. Obraztsov supposed that the stone was a meteorite, showed it to senior students and gave it to the astronomy teacher, A. Ivanova:.Knowing the importance of such finds, the teacher reported about the stone to the Meteorite Committee.
