SUMMARY
Sharikov A.V., Makarova T.V. 2014. Bats in the diet of owls in Northern Eurasia. Plecotus et al. 17: 3036. The review includes literature and our own data on occurrence of bats in the diet of owls (Strigiformes) in Northern Eurasia, within the borders of the former USSR. Bats were recorded in the dietary composition of nine owl species. In total 19 bat species of 12 genera and 3 families were discovered among owls' preys. Remnants of bats in owls' pellets were found mainly in southern parts of the region, and the northernmost records were made in the city of Moscow, Leningrad region and Perm Region. The highest bat species diversity was observed in the diet of the barn owl (Tyto alba), long-eared owl (Asio otus), tawny owl (Strix aluco) and eagle-owl (Bubo bubo). More than a third of 44 records of bats accounted for pipistrelles (P. pipistrellus, P. pygmaeus, P. nathusii and P. kuhlii). Proportion of each species in the diet of owls mostly did not exceed 12%, although in some places it reached up to 25% in winter. Bats seemed to become owls' preys only in winters with long thaw when bats were rather active. K e y w o r d s : bats, owls, diet
