PROPHET - ITN (FP7-PEOPLE-2010-ITN)
Grant Agreement no. 264687
Postgraduate Research on Photonics as an Enabling Technology
Job title: 1.8 -2.5 µm long wavelength quantum dash based lasers for gas
sensing

Job summary PROPHET (Postgraduate Research on Photonics as an Enabling
Technology -
www.prophet-itn.eu ) is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network funded by
the EU FP7. Within PROPHET, the CNRS Laboratory for Photonics and
Nanostructures (LPN) has a vacancy for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR)
funded for a period of 36 months.
The ESR based at LPN will be responsible for the development of novel
sources for gas sensing and other applications in the range 1.8-2.5 µm,
based on InAs/InP Qdash nanostructures.
Single frequency DFB lasers will be designed and fabricated using state-of-
the-art processing facilities available at LPN, and will be used for diode
laser absorption spectroscopy.

The research activity will be carried out in collaboration with III-VLab
for laser structure growth optimization, and with secondments at the
University of Lancaster.

Description of research.

Monitoring the environment, whether it be the level of pollutants in the
atmosphere, or gaseous components in industrial manufacturing processes,
has been well served by photonics, utilising infrared absorption
characteristics for gas sensing. PROPHET will look to develop novel mid-
infrared laser sources for improved efficiency and sensitivity in the
detection of a range of important gases.

The ESR at LPN will perform the bulk of the device fabrication based on
high-technology facilities for the process of ridge waveguide lasers.
Design and modelling of single transverse mode waveguides using beam
propagation methods, fabrication of both Fabry-Perot laser diodes and DFB
lasers, using inductive coupled plasma (ICP) dry etching will be performed
on long wavelength InAs/InP QDash-based active layers.

The PhD student will pursue the project activity within the LPN PHOTEL
Group and will interact with researchers working in several areas in
semiconductor physics, nanophotonics and related applications. Within the
PROPHET network, collaboration is planned with several partners including
III-VLab (Marcoussis) for laser structure optimization, University of
Lancaster for material characterization and growth techniques and PROCAL
for implementation of the devices in test-beds.

The PhD student is expected to pursue his/her own career plan and
professional growth in the
spirit of Marie Curie actions.

Qualifications Master degree or equivalent (usually 3+2 years) in
Semiconductor Physics or related areas: Photonics, Materials Science,
Electronic Engineering or similar.
The academic degree should formally entitle the candidate to start a
doctorate in France or in the country of origin.

Marie Curie rules
ITN PROPHET is managed under 2010 Work Programme for Marie Curie Actions,
which is available on the Cordis web
site:http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/mariecurieactions/library_en.html
Please refer to the 2010 Work Programme for precise statements about
transnational mobility and eligibility rules, salary, allowances, career
plan, etc.

Eligibility Applicants can be of any nationality (European or non-
European), but they are required to satisfy the eligibility criteria for
Marie Curie Early Stage Researchers:
- Must be within the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their
research career, i.e., measured from the date when they obtained the degree
which formally entitles them to start a doctorate.
- Must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies,
etc) in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to
the recruitment.
Salary: ~EUR 42 388 /year, full cost including taxes and social charges.
Mobility, travel and career exploratory allowances will be added, depending
upon country of origin and family situation of ESR, according to EU
regulations.
