Tomoe - A handwriting recognition engine

Tomoe - Tegaki Online MOji recognition Engine - is a software which provides a handwriting recognition engine and its user interface on open source desktop environment. Here, "Tegaki" means "Handwriting" and "Moji" means "Letter" in Japanese. Currently it supports only Japanese, but we are planning to support also other languages such as Chinese.

We are now developing & distributing following softwares:

Handwriting recognition engine library:
    A library which provides a handwriting recognition engine. It outputs list of candidates by inputting strokes data. It includes dictionary data for Level.1 Kanji character set defined in JIS X 0208 (Japanese Industrial Standards), but not includes Level.2 or higher, voiced Hiragana & Katakana and so on...
User interface widget library for handwriting recognition:
    A library which provides GUI widgets such as a canvas for handwriting or a list view to show candiates. So application programmers can embed handwriting recognition feature easily into their applications. Currently we only destributing widgets for GTK+. For Qt/KDE environment, only a front end program exists. It isn't a GUI widgets library.
uim module:
    A Hepler program for the uim which is a multilingual input method library. You can input a recognized letter to an application via this program.
SCIM module:
    A Helper plugin for the SCIM which is a multilingual input method library. You can input a recognized letter to an application via this module. Currently this module is distributed by "SCIM IMEngine" project, not by Tomoe or SCIM project.

Now we are going to implement not only handwriting recognition feature but also any other character searching methods such as "Search by strokes number", and we are aiming to make it as default character input pad for any open source desktop environment.

We released tomoe-0.6.0, tomoe-gtk-0.6.0, scim-tomoe-0.6.0 and uim-tomoe-gtk-0.6.0.

Changes from 0.5.x:

    * Simplified Chinese dictionary. (Thanks Red Hat engineers!)
    * Enhanced Japanese dictionary (support JIS X 0208 level2).
    * Choose default dictionary automatically according to current locale.
     However currently no dictionary will be enabled with most locales except ja and zh_CN, and on-demand language switching is not implemented yet. Please use tomoe application with ja or zh_CN locale like this:

     $ LANG=zh_CN uim-tomoe-gtk
     $ LANG=ja scim-tomoe
     ...

    * Rename the package name of libtomoe-gtk to tomoe-gtk.
    * Add tomoe_gtk_init() and tomoe_gtk_quit(). Although tomoe_window_new() calls tomoe_gtk_init() internally for compatibility reason, it is recommended to call tomoe_gtk_init() manually in your code.
    * Add --with-gucharmap option to tomoe-gtk.
    * Python binding.
    * Some minor fixes.

A stroke editor has been added to svn repository

Thanks to Red Hat engineers, a stroke editor for Tomoe has been added to our subversion repository. You can edit Tomoe's handwriting dictionary by using it.

Red Hat engineers also developing a Chineses dictionary. Tomoe will support Chinese in the neer future!
