The world is changing from one that always has been mostly rural to one that is in majority urban. The expansive growth of cities is one of the main trends today; globalization has not led to post-urban era. The article attempts to follow the development of the main propositions of urban sociology starting with the analysis of the classical sociologists (K. Marx, F. Engels, G. Simmel, M. Weber) and ending with the concept of global cities (S. Sassen). The difference between urbanization and urbanism is also considered.
