Joint Russian-Ethiopian Biological Expedition: a new Agreement between the RAS and the EAST Agreements between the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ethiopian Agency for Science and TechnologySince January 1, 2008, the Joint Russian-Ethiopian Biological Expedition has entered into the third phase of its activity. The basis for this was provided by a signing of a new Agreement between the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ethiopian Agency for Science and Technology, which was held on the 24th of December of the past year in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). The new Agreement has determined the character of Expedition Activity for the coming 5 years. In the signing procedure from Russian part the following members of official delegation participated: the member of Presidium of the RAS, the deputy Academician-Secretary of the Biological Science Department, the chief of the Section of General Biology of the RAS, Academician of the RAS Dmitriy Sergeevich Pavlov (the head of delegation), the member of the Bureau of the Biological Science Department of the RAS, Corresponding member of the RAS Yuriy Yulianovich Dgebuadze, the deputy director of the SIEE RAS Yuriy Porfiryevich Prischepo, and also the coordinator of the Joint Russian-Ethiopian Biological Expedition from Russian part Andrey Anatolyevich Darkov. The Ethiopian part was presented by the General Director of the Agency – Dr. Zerihun Kebede and the chiefs of the Agency Departments. The official ceremony was attended by the Acting Attorney in business relations between Russia and Ethiopia mister I.N. Chubarov, the counselors of Russian embassy and director of Russian Center for Science and Culture in Ethiopia mister V.T. Kirsanov. Representatives of Ethiopian television and local periodicals were present. Academician D.S. Pavlov and Dr. Zerihun Kebede made greeting speeches.
As previously, Expedition activity will be directed towards the study of Ethiopian biological resources with the purpose of creation of scientific basis for their rational use and conservation. At the same time, in the signed Agreement the peculiar attention is paid to the need of analysis of collected during previous period data, creation of integrative summaries on variety of questions and strengthening of educative component for Ethiopian specialists in the network of joint studies and publications.
