Сбор ихтиологического материала на р. Вэйб, юго-западная Эфиопия

Совместная Российско-Эфиопская биологическая экспедиция (JERBE) была организована в соответствии с Соглашением между Академией наук СССР и Эфиопской Комиссией по науке и технике, подписанным 17 января 1987 г. Основной задачей экспедиции является полномасштабное изучение биологического разнообразия Эфиопии с уточнением видового состава основных систематических групп организмов, образующих водные и наземные экосистемы и имеющих существенное экономическое значение (рыб, млекопитающих, птиц, насекомых, почвенных организмов и водных беспозвоночных, различных компонентов растительного покрова и др.), а также их экологии для разработки научных основ рационального использования и охраны биологических ресурсов страны. За прошедшее время участниками экспедиции опубликовано более 140 научных работ, в т.ч. ряд монографий. Полевыми работами экспедиции охвачена практически вся территория страны, наиболее продолжительные и детальные исследования проведены в Эфиопской Рифтовой долине, районах Гамбелла и Иллубабор (юго-западная Эфиопия), в бассейнах рек Омо, Текезе и Голубой Нил. Особое внимание уделено эндемичным формам рыб и млекопитающих, населяющим бассейн озера Тана. Изучение млекопитающих ведется также в национальных парках Нечесар, Аваш и Бале. Российские специалисты принимали участие в экологической оценке ряда технических проектов на территории Эфиопии, а также в биологической части разработки планов развития отдельных районов страны. Научные исследования Экспедиции проводятся в тесном сотрудничестве со следующими эфиопскими организациями: Биологическим департаментом Аддис-Абебского университета, Министерством сельского хозяйства (Департаментом развития животноводства и рыбных ресурсов), Эфиопской организацией сельскохозяйственных исследований, Организацией по охране дикой природы, региональными управлениями сельского хозяйства и Национальными парками.

6 декабря 2002 г. состоялось подписание зонтичного Соглашения между Российской Академией наук и Эфиопской Комиссией по науке и технике о проведении в ближайшие два года второго этапа Совместной Российско-Эфиопской биологической экспедиции (JERBE-II). Этим документом предусматривается установление прямых научных контактов российской части JERBE-II с эфиопскими научными организациями. Соответствующие Рабочие Соглашения были подписаны 20 марта 2003 г. с Эфиопской организацией сельскохозяйственных исследований и 28 августа того же года с Биологическим Департаментом Факультета Науки Аддис-Абебского Университета. Этими соглашениями предусматривается продолжение работ по изучению ихтиофауны и фауны мелких наземных млекопитающих Эфиопии.
