ALEX

ALEX is an attempt to build an image processor for Scanning Force Microscopy images. It is written in the MATLAB environment (Mathworks), thus it is a collection of m files. ALEX requires MATLAB 4.2c to be run. The image processing toolbox (by Mathworks) is also required. The program was built and tested on an SGI machine but only a few changes will be required to adapt it to other Unix platforms.

The basic idea was to build a user friendly interface to display SFM images with the capability of modifing and trasforming the image by means of custom-made functions. Using the versatility of Matlab, the functions can also be written in C and Fortran and compiled using the MATLAB compilers cmex and fmex. External programs can be called using the 'unix' command. To be able to work on an image, only a few concepts of the structure of ALEX, plus a basic knowledge of MATLAB, are needed.

ALEX was written to assist the Nanoscope III software (Digital Instruments). It reads and writes the Nanoscope III file format. Images can also be imported from and exported to several formats (TIFF, GIF, PCX, MATLAB, ASCII, SPIDER).
