Supernova 2002bx in IC 2461

This is found to be a type II supernova on the rise in an edge on galaxy.
We have a DSS Photometry reference image made by Odd Trondal.

Dear SN watchers,
The KAIT team and Tom Boles has discovered a probably rising nearby SN in the galaxy on the border of Lyn-LMi. The expected maximum for typical SN Ia is mag about 14.0.
SN 2002bx is discovered by the KAIT team on Mar 31.2 at mag about 16.9, and confirmed on the next night (mag 16.8). Tom independently discovered it on Apr. 1.943, when he estimated the magnitude as 16.2. The position of the new object (the KAIT measurement) is: R.A. = 9h19m54s.98, Decl. = +37o12'08".3 (2000.0), which is about 37" west and 40" north of the nucleus of the edge-on spiral (Sbc) galaxy IC 2461. The SN is almost superimposed on, but slightly (2-3") south of, the disk plane. No confusing foreground star are there. Several mag 15 stars are around the galaxy, but because of their redness, take care in choosing the comparison stars in the magnitude estimates.
The recession velocity of IC 2461 is measured as 2260 km/s. The Galactic extinction is negligible. If it is unreddened by the interstellar matter in the host galaxy, the expected maximum for typical SN Ia is mag about 14.0. The spectroscopic classification and the followup magnitude estimates are urged.

The host galaxy of SN 2002bx is IC 2461, a somewhat nearby edge-on spiral galaxy. The expected maximum for SN Ia is mag about 14.0. The information will be posted on vsnet-campaign-sn.

It is normal type-II SN caught on the early phase. The continuum is quite blue, but narrow Na D lines are visible.
