Supernova 2002bu in NGC 4242
This page is devoted to information on Supernova 2002bu in NGC 4242 Basic information on this SN, including the last reported brightness, on this Supernova can be found on the main page.  Information on the original web pages for many of these images can be found on the updates and links web pages.
This is a type IIn supernova found in a
galaxy which is in Canes Venatici.
This galaxy is part of CVn cloud II, which is
associated with the Virgo cluster.
We have a DSS Photometry reference image made by Odd Trondal.

Dear SN watchers,
A nearby (nearer than the Virgo cluster) SN is discovered at mag 15.5. The expected maximum for the typical SN Ia is mag about 11.7.
SN 2002bu is discovered on Mar. 28.26 UT at Puckett Observatory. The position of the SN is: R.A. = 12h17m37s.18, Decl. = +45o38'47".4 (2000.0), which is about 73" east and 98" north of the center of the somewhat irregular-shaped (SAB(s)dm) galaxy NGC 4242. Because of the large angular diameter (5'.0 x 3'.8), there are many foregroud stars superimposed on this galaxy. And, H II regions and large clusters of stars are also populous. The identification of SN should be done carefully.
NGC 4242 is a member of a nearby group of galaxy called "Canes Venatici II cloud", whose mean redshift is about 750 km/s. The expected maximum for the typical SN Ia is mag about 11.7, and even if it is of type-II, it can become brighter than mag 14. The spectroscopic confirmation and the followup photometries are surely urged.

We have submitted an article below to CBAT.
SUPERNOVA 2002bu IN NGC 4242
K. Ayani and T. Kawabata, Bisei Astronomical Observatory (BAO);
and H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University, report: "We obtained a
low-resolution spectrum (range 400-700 nm; resolution 0.7 nm) of SN
2001bu (IAUC 7863) with the BAO 1.01-m reflector on Mar. 31.66 UT.
It shows a flat continuum with strong and narrow (FWHM about 1100
km/s) Balmar emission lines, which indicates that it is of type IIn.
The redshifts of emission lines are about 600 km/s, which is consistent
with that of NGC 4242.
