Dear Dr Bochkarev

Jay Gallagher, Editor-in-Chief of The Astronomical Journal, wrote to you last week about changes to the publication process for the AJ. On behalf of the IOP-AAS Project Team, I am delighted to announce that IOP Publishing is now processing all new submissions to the AJ.

Submitting a new article
To submit a new article to the journal, go to
http://authors.iop.org/aj, where you will find our beta version of the new AJ web submission site. We are committed to providing a first-class service for the astronomy community and will be seeking ways to improve our submission process, so if you have any comments or questions please contact us or use the feedback form available online; we would especially appreciate your comments during this initial period.

You may still submit articles by post or FTP (see the online Author Guidelines), but we highly recommend using the online submission site. To take *full* advantage of our Author Services, an IOP user account is required. If you already have an account to read, publish in or referee for IOP journals, you can use the same username and password for the AJ.

When you are ready to send your next AJ paper, please visit
http://authors.iop.org/aj, create an account and begin your submission. While it is possible to submit a paper without logging in as an IOP user, you will not be able to see the PDF file built by the system or check it before it begins peer review. The software that produces the PDF file is robust. We recommend that you first try building your PDF file using the initial options set by the software. If the file looks good, you can proceed; if not, you can take advantage of the submission system's options for tagging and rearranging files before building another PDF. If this fails or there are any other problems you can choose to send the files to IOP to build the PDF.

Once the AJ office has formally acknowledged your submission via e-mail, you will be asked to confirm the details of your account. From your homepage on our Author Services, you can monitor the progress of your article, make revisions and check proofs.

Refereeing an article
If the editors ask you to review an article you will receive an e-mail directing you to the IOP Referee Services web site where you will be able to view article files, contact the editorial office and submit your review.

As you know, there will be a transition time during the next few months, during which AJ activities will move from the University of Chicago Press to IOP. During that time some activities, such as refereeing, will be running on both systems. This transitional period will last through December 31, 2007, and in 2008 all AJ publishing and editorial work will be supported by IOP.

For more information about the AJ's move to IOP Publishing, please go to the new AJ homepage at
http://www.iop.org/EJ/aj or contact me directly.

We look forward to working with you.
