1st Russian Fulbright Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS

Dear colleagues,

we invite you to participate in the conference "Fulbright Program in Russia. Prospects and Problems of the Community of Scholars" scheduled for April 19-20, 2001 in Moscow.

We plan to discuss the problems of self-organization of the Fulbright alumni community, our contacts with other Russian-American and international academic exchange associations, a contribution we are willing and able to make to the self-preservation and renewal of the intellectual community, consolidation of civil society, educational reform and development in Russia. The ways and means of ensuring effective communications - professional, institutional, interdisciplinary, inter-univerisity and international - are likely to constitute the focus of the prospective discussion.

The tentative outline of the key issues to be engaged:

• How do we envision the major targets and future activities of the Filbright alumni association in Russia? How could we contribute to the "matching" of American Fulbrighters and Russian universities as hosts?
• What makes the Russian and the American academic communities different? What has interaction with the American academic environment taught us, individually? What strong or weak aspects of the domestic university setup have been exposed by the contrast?
• What problems does the necessity to combine tradition and innovation, the indigenous and the foreign (in pedagogy and research) present? How "dramatic" is generational change and how "hot" the gender issue in the Russian academic framework?
• What are the current state and the prospects of the American studies in Russia? By whom and how is knowledge about America being produced, disseminated and consumed in our country? What is your (professional) estimate of the present situation and the real possibilities of cultural interaction between Russia and the US?
• What new challeges does higher education face in the rapidly changing social situation in Russia? What more can be done to foster innovative research? What positive experiences of interdisciplinary cooperation are available? What helps and what prevents the full-scale integration of Russian scholars (particularly, in humanities) into the international community and "conversation"?
