Zosima the Deacon and his pilgrimage to Constantinople or on the origins of a certain mistake
The paper focuses on a fragment of the "Book called `Xenos' that is the wanderer of the deacon Zosima about the Russian road to Constantinople and to Jerusalem. The pilgrimage and life of sinful Zosima, monk and deacon of the Sergius Monastery"1 . The author of the presentation aims at a commentary on Zosima's mention of a liquid, which is said to have been given to Christ to drink with a sponge during His execution. The sponge was later kept in Constantinople, in the Prodromos Monastery. Zosima calls the liquid the sponge was saturated with "o", which the English translator of his work, George P. Majeska, translates as "vinegar". The proposed study tries to show how imprecise the wording of Zosima and Majeska is. It adopts the line of reasoning of Andrew Dalby2 , Ewald Kislinger3 , and other numerous researchers, who have demonstrated evidence that the liquid was not plain vinegar but a mixture of vinegar and water. The ancient Romans knew it as posca, while the Greeks as phouska () and oksykraton (). Posca/phouska/oksykraton was a Roman development. Both antiquity as well as the Middle Ages prove its popularity. It lent itself to being used as an every-day drink. Its common use is well attested throughout early imperial history. Later on, it spread all over the Roman Empire due to its utilization in the army. It is important that in antiquity an equivalent of posca, i.e. oksykraton, was already known to the Greekspeaking world. The author of the presentation argues that it was also the military which contributed to the use of the liquid in medicine. There is no evidence disproving the popularity of the liquid in late antiquity and Byzantium. It is interesting to notice that Greek authors from the Byzantine period already used both the term oksykraton and a Hellenized form of the word posca, phouska. The author of the presentation interprets this fact as another piece of evidence attesting to a growing acceptance of

the liquid as a drink in the East. However, since the term phouska was used by Aetius of Amida and Paul of Aegina to denote a healing potion, it should also be concluded that the beneficial qualities of posca had already been noted in ancient times. The doctrine was later incorporated into Greek medical findings on oksykraton. Accordingly, at the time of the Crucifixion both the East and West treated the liquid as an important remedy. The imprecision apparent in Zosima's work and its translation is only an example of a cornucopia of similar mistakes made by ancient and medieval authors as well as their translators into modern languages. In order to explain the phenomenon, the presentation accepts the arguments promoted by Andrew Dalby4 and argues that the imprecision of the wording used by Zosima and his translator should be explained on the basis of unfamiliarity of the term posca in the Greek-speaking East at the time of compilation of the Gospel. Since there was no Greek equivalent term, authors of the Crucifixion narratives rendered the word by means of the Greek oksos (), probably because the latter also designated vinegar-based products. The "Enarratio in prophetam Isaiam", attributed to Basil of Caesarea, is an example of such usage. The Vulgate misinterpreted the specific meaning of the Greek term used in the context by Mark the Evangelist and simplified it into acetum. The over-simplified interpretation prevailed and contributed to the mistake in Latin, Greek and other literatures. Though generally in agreement with the argumentation, the author would like to suggest a new meaning of the way posca/okrykraton/phouska was utilized in the Crucifixion narrative. Notably, a new light on the problem is shed by medical treatises, which constitute a body of information that has been neglected in so far. Having analyzed selected medical treatises, the author concludes that they preserve ample evidence supporting the opinion about posca/phouska/oksykraton being used as a drink. The author of the present paper, however, has also found substantial information on external applications of oksykraton. First and foremost, the liquid was used in a considerable number of medical procedures as an effective cleansing and rinsing agent, which also seemed to play the role of a modern-day antiseptic. Moreover, it was included in a variety of healing lotions. The medical writings teach that a sponge saturated with oksykraton was used

to wipe the face of those who suffered from diarrhea, were feverish or sweated excessively. Oksykraton was also commonly used to prepare the skin for further treatment, for instance, to cleanse the area where a poultice was to be applied. Similarly, it was applied as a constituent of embroche (), i. e. fomentations and lotions, believed to help heal open injuries, sores, ulcerated areas and the like. Last but not least, it stopped hemorrhages, reduced swellings and healed bruising. Additionally, bandages saturated with it were applied to surgical wounds, while inflamed places were rinsed with the liquid. The body of evidence presented above encourages the author of the presentation to infer that the performance of medical procedures based on the external use of posca/oksykraton/phouska was as probable as the fact that the liquid was given to Jesus to quench His thirst. To sum up, one can argue that the sponge mentioned by Zosima was used to administer oksykraton to Christ as part of a routine procedure which was aimed at alleviating Christ's sufferings caused by the scorching, thirst-inducing heat of the day of the Crucifixion, and at treating the injuries which He sustained during torture. ..
