Division of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology.
The Division of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology trains students in "Hydrogeology and engineering geology"
(qualification "geologist-hydrologist"). It includes six specializations.
In "Hydrogeology" specialization the students go into the modem methods of hydrogeological investigations.
Future hydrogeologists acquire skills of hydrogeological survey, of evaluation of groundwater resources using
physical and mathematical modeling, of investigations in the field of groundwater geochemistry (hydrochemistry)
and special hydrogeology. Specialists having graduated from the department of hydrogeology know the methodology
of hydrogeological survey, of search for and exploration of groundwater deposits both mineral and commercial ones,
of hydrogeological investigations at the mineral resources deposits and melioration hydrogeology.
The graduates of "Engineering geology" specialization must have a vast geological background and know
the state-of-the-art methods of studies and forecast of engineering-geological conditions for industrial, urban,
hydrotechnical, road and underground construction. They acquire all the necessary knowledge to conduct engineering
geological survey and exploration. Fundamental knowledge in mathematics, physics and chemistry allow them to go
successfully into modeling and estimation of engineering geological processes.
The graduates of "Soil sciences and artificial lithogenesis" acquire all the necessary knowledge for thorough
studies of composition and properties of different rocks both by traditional methods and by using state-of-the-art
equipment: X-ray, electronic microscope, etc. During their practical field work in Zvenigorod they study the field
methods of rock properties definition. The knowledge obtained allows them not only to forecast the rock behavior
under the constructions but also to be involved with the problems of the improvement of these rock properties,
that is artificial lithogenesis, on the basis of the state-of-the-art physico-chemical techniques.
The graduates of "Geological environment protection" specialization acquire knowledge which is necessary
to solve the problems of the geological environment monitoring and of working out long-term forecasts of its change
under the influence of various kinds of industrial activity.
Students specializing in "General geocryology" will become experts in the field of general and theoretical
geocryology, in the research of the processes of permafrost and seasonally frozen rocks, geocryological mapping
and forecasting. Specialists-geocryologists of broad qualification are employed by geological, scientific and
design organizations at all the stages of organizing oil-and-gas and mining industries in northern regions of
the country.
Specialists in "Engineering geocryology" have profound knowledge in the field of engineering constructions
on permafrost foundations, they know the specific features of engineering-geological surveys for the objects of
urban, industrial, hydrotechnical and pipeline construction, underground and highway engineering in the permafrost
zone.
