Division of Geology.
The Section of Geology train students in specialities: "Geological survey, search for and exploration of mineral
resources deposits" (qualification "geologist") and "Oil and gas geology" (qualification "oil geologist").
In the limits of speciality "Geological survey, search for and exploration of mineral resources
deposits" there is four specializations.
Geology and geological prospecting. The graduates of this specialization will be employed
by companies dealing with exploration and mineral resources studies. Students take courses in endogenic ore formation
and comparative metallogeny of the continents and oceans; they are strongly encouraged to study the laws of ore
deposits formation and distribution, and rock and ore composition using modern physical methods.
Geological survey, search for mineral resources. The graduates have a good command of
knowledge in the field of structure and evolution of the Earth crust, which makes it possible for them to carry
out complex geological survey and search for mineral resources.
Lithology and marine geology. The department of lithology and marine geology trains specialists
in general and theoretical lithology, in the investigations of the laws of sedimentary rock formation, in the
formation and distribution of sedimentary mineral resources in the earth crust, in lithological mapping while
conducting geological survey, search and exploration.
Paleontology. Students take courses in paleontology of invertebrate, micropaleontology,
paleontology of vertebrate, paleobotany.
The speciality "Oil and gas geology" is subdivided into three main specialization: "Oil and gas geology",
"Geology of marine oil and gas deposits" and "Geology of coal and shale deposits".
A petroleum geologist must be well versed in the various branches of fuel mineral geology namely, stratigraphy,
sedimentology, structural geology and geophysical techniques. After having graduated from the University students
are able to solve complex problems of petroleum-gas-coal formation and distribution of fuel mineral resources
both on land and off-shore. They study concrete regions to assess their oil, gas and coal potential and conduct
search for and exploration of the deposits.
