There are two directions of scientific investigations of the department in 1996-2000:
1. «Theory of formation of engineering geological Earth's conditions and their evolution at the epoch of technogenesis (changing under technogenesis)»
2. «Development of fundamentals of the doctrine on ecological functions of the lithosphere».
There are several scientific problems in the framework of the first direction:
1. Classification of the engineering geological Earth's structures and their characteristic (Project manager – Prof. Trofimov V.T.; investigator – Ass. Prof. Averkina T.I.);
2. Engineering geology and ecological (environmental) geology: theoretical and methodological basics and their relation (project manager - Prof. Trofimov V.T.; investigator - head of the lab. Ziling D.G)
3. Theoretical and methodical principles of simulation and forecast of soil properties using their mineral, structural and thermodynamic indices. Development of fundamental principles of simulation and forecast of clay soils behavior in the zone of technogenesis for prospecting optimization and ecological problems solution (Project manager – Prof. Korolev V.A.)
4. Loess “envelope” of the Earth, its structure and subsidence genesis (Project manager - Prof. Trofimov V.T.; investigator - Senior Research Worker Balykova S.D.);
5. Regularities of formation of engineering geological properties of volcanic rocks in different tectonic Earth's structures (Project manager - Prof. Golodkovskaya G.A.; investigator - Senior Research Worker Ladygin V.M.)
6. Investigation of temporal effects of soil deformation and destruction under variable loads (Project manager - Prof. Trofimov V.T.; investigator - Ass. Prof. Voznesensky E.A.)
7. Artificial soils as a result of technogenesis (Project manager - Prof. Trofimov V.T.; investigator - Ass. Prof. Nikolaeva S.K.);
8. Development of methods of probabilistic modelling of engineering geological processes using cellule automates (Project manager - Prof. Kolomensky E.N.);
9. Regularities and mechanism of slope processes and attendant ones. Development of typical engineering geological models and geomechanical schemes as the base of prediction and substantiation of engineering protection (Project manager - Prof. Zolotarev G.S., investigator - Prof. Kalinin E.V.);

13. The study of historical geological regularities of formation of engineering geological features of masses with thick ice-wedge ice (Project manager - Prof. Vasil'chuk Yu.K.);
Development of the fundamentals of ecological functions of the lithosphere doctrine (Project manager - Prof. Trofimov V.T.; investigator - head of the lab. Ziling D.G.);
1. Investigations “Theory and methodology of environmental geology” were carried out by member of the department together with the Ministry of Natural Resources in 1996-1998. The monograph “The theory and methodology of ecological (environmental) geology” is the result of them. Since 1999 «Contents and methods of compilation of ecological geological maps of new generation” investigations are worked out together with the same ministry.
2. Contract work with Zagorsk hydropower accumulate station was conducted in 1998-1999. Researches “Evaluation of slope stability around constructions of Zagorsk station at the beginning of its exploitation” were finished in 1998. Since 1999 new contract “Evaluation of engineering geological characteristics impact on slope stability (slope around constructions of Zagorsk station) under conditions of reconstructed drainage screen» is carried out.
