Laboratory of Snow Avalanches and Mudflows
|
Wide and deep snow avalanche and cover studies at the Faculty of Geography started soon after Prof. Georgiy Kazimirovich Tushinskiy, the founder of Soviet and Russian avalanche science, had entered this institution.
In 1964 on the initiative of Prof. G.K. Tushinskiy the Thematic Laboratory of Snow Avalanches was established. Later on it was reorganized in the Research Laboratory of Snow Avalanches and Mudflows.
Purposes and tasks
- Implementation of integrated scientific research works to contribute to investigations of avalanche hazard in mountain areas.
- Development of the theory of avalanche formation, snow steadiness and motion on mountain slopes.
- Elaboration of methods for forecasting the time of avalanching and measures to provide protection from snow avalanches and mudflows in different geographical conditions.
- Rendering of scientific and methodological assistance to different institutions and organizations in solving problems of avalanche hazard assessment in mountain areas.
- Development and refinement of methods for avalanche hazard prevention and measures for snow avalanche and mudflow control and protection.
- Study of glacier dynamics and corresponding disastrous phenomena.
