David Moon is a specialist on Russian, American, and transnational environmental history. He is a graduate of the Universities of Newcastle (B.A.) and Birmingham (Ph.D.) in the UK and spent a year as a graduate student at Leningrad State University. Before moving to York in 2012, he held posts at the Universities of Texas at Austin, USA, Newcastle, Strathclyde in Glasgow, and Durham in the UK. He has held visiting posts in Russia, for example at the Southern Federal University in Rostov-na-Donu in 2003 and the USA, including the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton in 2008-9.
His books include: The Russian Peasantry 1600-1930: The World the Peasants Made (London and New York, 1999) and The Plough that Broke the Steppes: Agriculture and Environment on Russia’s Grasslands, 1700-1914 (Oxford, 2013), which was awarded the Alexander Nove Prize. He has published many articles and books chapters, including some in Russian translation, for example Д. Public lecture: «The 'American' Steppe: Influences from Russia and Ukraine on the Great Plains, 1870s-1930s'»
Abstract:
This lecture explores influences from the steppes of Russia and Ukraine on the American Great Plains. By analyzing connections between two regions with similar environments and environmental histories, it considers how far the transformation of the Great Plains into a major agricultural region drew on prior experience on the Russian and Ukrainian steppes.
Drawing on research spanning the humanities, social and natural sciences, it sheds light on this under researched aspect of American history and challenges preconceptions of the relationship between Russia and the USA.
The main influences were: crop varieties, in particular types of wheat; genetic soil science (chernozem); forestry techniques, especially shelterbelts; and weeds – the tumbleweed.
The lecture considers the roles of migrants, in particular Mennonites from the southern steppe and Jewish scientists, and also of contacts and exchanges of ideas between Russian/Soviet and American scientists.
