Our research group studies quantum phenomena in nanostructures and
nanomaterials using optics, i.e. lasers, and magnetotransport.
Optical investigations of graphene
Graphene (a single layer of graphite) is a new two-dimensional system
(Its discovery won the 2010 Nobel physics prize.) which is now attracting
enormous attention because of its intriguing properties and potential
applications in carbon-based electronics. It is a zero-gap semiconductor
and its charge carriers have zero effective mass and therefore move
relativistically. This makes the study of relativistic quantum mechanics,
normally a rather exotic activity, potentially accessible using the experimental
techniques available in our laboratory.
We plan to study graphene using Raman spectroscopy. This experimental
technique has been shown to be an important tool in studies of single and
multilayer graphene: it is sensitive to the details of the crystal structure,
defects, doping and evolution of the material under chemical treatment. As
well as providing a valuable non-invasive method to distinguish monolayer
graphene from bilayers and multilayers, in Exeter we will study the Raman
spectrum as a function of the temperature using a wide variety of lasers,
ranging in wavelength from 325 nm to 785 nm. We expect the intensity and
position of the various Raman peaks in the spectrum to be sensitive to the
sample temperature and the incoming photon energy.
Prospective candidates, who have a very good Bachelor or Master's Degree
in physics (or equivalent) and excellent references, should send a short CV to

Вакансию запостил мой брат, защитивший PhD в Англии.
Очень интересная вакансия для тех, кто видит себя дальше в науке.
Я не очень разбираюсь в том, какие преимущества для обучения дальше физики, но могу заверить, социальные условия прекрасные.

почему такой темы не было у меня на диплом...
правда лазеры у меня были YaG:Nd 1,06 мкм и на красителе 0,6 мкм.
