Our main tools are linear algebra, singular value decomposition, low rank approximation of tensors. It really involves a beautiful math, but has a big programming/software development component. It is always interesting to find a right proportion. For example, I do like Python and I am very interested in reproducible research, but what I am really interested in, is that a new algorithm solves the problem much better than before! Besides the development of new algorithms, I also like to find new applications.

PhD Fellowship (3 years)

Mass spectrometry study of riboswitch RNA folding

Project: Riboswitches are regulatory segments of mRNA that respond to the binding of a co-factor

(typically, a metabolite) by a change of conformation of their aptamer domain. This conformational

change alters the expression of the protein encoded by that mRNA. The structure of some riboswitch

complexes with metabolites have been solved, but their folding mechanisms were found to be very

diverse, and are far from being elucidated, yet alone predicted.

Our team is specialized in mass spectrometry of intact nucleic acid structures and their complexes with

cations and ligands. With the DNAFOLDIMS project, a new instrument unique in Europe will enable us to

perform ion mobility spectrometry coupled to mass spectrometry (IMS-MS). For each complex separated

based on its mass, IMS will make possible to distinguish compact and open conformations.

The advanced mass spectrometry approaches proposed here is uniquely suited to disentangle the

interplay between cation binding, metabolite binding and conformational changes, thanks to 2D

mass/mobility separation. The ultimate objective is to be able classify riboswitches according to the type

of conformational response, screen small molecules for their capacity to elicit specific conformational

response, and ultimately discover new molecules of pharmaceutical interest.

Funding: Public - European project - ERC Consolidator Grant 2013 'DNAFOLDIMS'

Recruiting organization: Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (Inserm),

U869 unit ' ARNA - Artificial and Natural Regulation of Nucleic Acids '

Workplace: Institut Européen de Chimie et Biologie - Bordeaux - FRANCE

Applicant background: higher education/training in at least one of the following: Physical, analytical, or

supramolecular chemistry - Biophysics - Mass spectrometry - Biochemistry. English mandatory.

Doctoral School: The PhD student will be enrolled in the "Health and Life Sciences" doctoral school of

the University of Bordeaux. For admission in the doctoral school, the candidates will have to provide

credentials for their succeeded years and their ranking (for example, Master 1 in Chemistry, June 2013,

ranked 3rd out of 12), and must have completed their Master thesis by early July, 2014.

To apply: Send a CV including master credentials, a letter (max. 1 page) outlining how you understand

the project and why you want to contribute, and one reference letter from a professor or internship tutor,

by email to Valérie Gabelica (v.gabelica@iecb.u-bordeaux.fr).

Deadline: Feb. 28, 2014 for first contact. April 30 to prepare doctoral school admission.

1st ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF UNIVERSAL REJECTION

Portland, Oregon, USA
August 16, 2014

We would like to extend a warm invitation to the first annual Conference of Universal Rejection! Tired of conferences where everyone talks and no one listens? Conferences full of dull, technical presentations that are way over your head? Our conference is different. No one talks and no one listens, and all presentations are both ground-breaking and accessible to an idiot. Join us! Portland, OR
Registration

Registration opens on April 1, 2014. In the mean time, you should try to reserve your spot: registration will be capped.

Submissions

We are accepting abstracts for talks. Please submit to j.universal.rejection@gmail.com. Talks can be on any topic, in any format, any length. Presenters must provide their own slide or A/V projectors and power source. All submissions will be rejected. Furthermore, we may post your name, abstract, and our rejection publicly at the blog Reprobatio Certa.

If you'd like to organize a Special Session, yeah, you could do that. Whatever floats your boat. If you send us your name, affiliation, and a title for your Special Session, we may even post that here in a nice table. (Special Session Organizers agree to act as universal rejectors.)

At this point, attendees who have made the mistake of bringing a laptop, tablet computer or handheld device may begin the work of alleviating the Journal's 100+ backlog of submissions. The rest of us can retire to the lawn for a game of bocce and refreshments.

Lodging

Please contact any local hotel and ask for the "Conference of Universal Rejection" group rate. After that, maybe you can email me j.universal.rejection@gmail.com and tell me what they said. It might be a good laugh for both of us.

Conference Policies

Please review these policies which are intended to confuse you and enrich the coffers of the Journal of Universal Rejection.

Journal of Universal Rejection T-shirts are required in lieu of name-badges, and must be worn at all times during the meeting.
Cell phones must be turned off when speaking with any Editor.
No photography or recording is allowed in oral sessions or in the Poster Exhibit Hall.
The placement of advertising in the meeting is limited to that of the Journal of Universal Rejection, Elsevier, Closed Access Journal, and/or their affiliates. There might be a corkboard somewhere if you know about any cool bands playing in PDX. No signs on Esels are permitted.
Corporate or institutional logos in slides or posters may appear only one time. Make sure slides are confined to outdoor park areas, next to the jungle-gym (monkey-bars).
Policies, rules, penalties, location are subject to change without notification. The Journal of Universal Rejection, its affiliates, third party vendors, etc., offer no guarantees. That said, attempts to attend the Conference of Universal Rejection will probably not turn out like this.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: You say Portland, Oregon. But where exactly? That's a pretty big place.

A: I'm glad you asked. That reminds me of a funny story... I registered to attend MathFest 2009 in Portland, Oregon. I guess the conference wasn't my number one priority and I failed to, um, look up where it was. Day of the conference arrives, and I happily hop on a bus headed to the Portland Convention Center. Upon arrival, I start wandering through the hallway. Looks like a normal math conference. Lots of people sitting on the floor knitting. But then I noticed three facts: (1) no-one was knitting a Moebius scarf, (2) I was the only man, and (3) everyone was knitting socks. (For the pedantic, yes (3) => (1).) It turns out I had stumbled into Sock Summit 2009. Yes, an entire conference about knitting socks. Well, crashing a sock-knitting conference was awesome, and for all those who can't tell a turned heel from a sock gusset, I recommend you get grafting and try it!

Q: Wait, you didn't answer my question. Where exactly is the 2014 Conference of Universal Rejection?

A: Well, maybe I'll give you some hints. HINT #1: It is not at the Portland Convention Center. (Watch for more hints later. This may be a bit like Cicada 3301, but probably more like a crossword puzzle or something.)

Q: Can I bring guests? What about pets?

A: Perhaps. Unless your guest/pet is an orang-utan-then not. (Though an orang-utan might be okay if you get him a T-shirt and avow that he is not murderous.)

Q: Who is going to be the, uh, Keystone Speaker?

A: Yes.

Q: Um... that wasn't a yes-or-no-question.

A: And that wasn't a question. What, are you interested? And famous?

Q: Why is this question so frequently asked?

A: Yeah, I was wondering that too.

Q: How do you feel about Powerpoint?

A: The more effects the better!

Q: o;puuioif 77777778ce4tyuiggggggggtghhujnmvbnijkmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm kppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppklllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;.///////////////////mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmopmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (Question most often asked by 4-year-olds)

Требуются знания в области физики твердого тела и/или оптики и/или взаимодействия лазерного излучения с веществом. Данная диссертация предполагает как экспериментальные исследования, так и численное моделирование.
Контактные лица:
Angela Vella (angela.vella@univ-rouen.fr)
Ammar Hideur (hideur@coria.fr)

Phd Proposition

Title : Electron spectroscopy and atom probe.
Laboratory: Groupe de physique des matériaux (GPM), University of Rouen, France
Team : Equipe d'instrumentation (ERIS) du Groupe de Physique des Matériaux (GPM)
Contact : Angela Vella (angela.vella@univ-rouen.fr), A. Hideur (hideur@coria.fr)

Activities at the GPM laboratory are centered on investigating the link between material properties and their features at the nanometer scale. One of the laboratory's 6 teams is the 'advanced instrumentation team' (ERIS) where the ultra fast laser assisted Atom Probe Tomography was developed in the 1990s. ERIS is one of the world's leading teams in the development of laser assisted 3D atom probes, in particular concerning field evaporation processes and laser matter interaction in nanoscaled structures[1-2].
This powerful technique allows the 3D imaging of nanometric tips, subjected to a high potential and illuminated by fs laser pulses. However, this imaging technique reaches today its limits due to the complexity of the physical mechanisms involved in the laser matter interaction at the nanoscale in ultrafast regime [3]. To overcome these severe limitations, one needs new physical information on the electron distributions before and after the laser interaction and on the surface defects' contribution to the light absorption. The combination of 3D atomic scale mapping with in-situ, time resolved, electron energy spectroscopy, will allow to access simultaneously at the electronic and structural properties of the probed sample.
Furthermore, nanometer tips, subjected to a high voltage and illuminated by fs laser pulses, are also used recently as electrons sources, when polirazed negatively. The recent development of these pulsed electron sources is a research topic very popular because of their possible use in time-resolved imaging [4] but also because these sources are a new system for studying the effects of quantum optics [5-6]. Several mechanisms for the electron emission have been highlighted depending on the characteristics of the laser pulse (mainly its fluence) [7]. Different mechanisms lead to ejection of the electron beams with distinct temporal and spectral properties.
During these PhD work, a setup for electron spectroscopy will be installed inside a typical atom probe chamber. The spectral properties of the different emissive sites on the tip will be studied (coupling of spatial and spectral characterizations) as well as their dependence on the laser parameters (polarization , illumination). Samples going from metal to dielectric tip will be analysed, with a particular focus on key materials of microelectronics.
Besides, the study of the energy of the emitted electrons may provide new information on the laser-nanotip interaction, which will be crucial for the development and improvement of the atom probe tomography. This study is a part of the ASAP project LABEX EMC3.

This pioneer work will be done in collaboration with the CORIA expert in laser sources, but also with French and international laboratories CEMES/LCAR (Toulouse), ULB (Brussels), Dalhousie University (CANADA).

2 PhD scholarship opportunities at the University of Limerick, Ireland
1) soil biomass interactions (PG1) 2) soil biozone development in domestic wastewater percolation areas (PG3)
Applications are invited for a four-year PhD scholarship at the University of Limerick as part of an
exciting interdisciplinary research project funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) entitled
'Mathematical modelling of soil biomass', which combines the generation of experimental data on
transport of nutrients phosphorus and sulphur and plant/microbial interactions in soil with advanced
mathematical modelling techniques.
 Position
The PhD scholarship is one of three funded within the project, and will start on 1st October 2014 or
as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be co-supervised by Dr. Achim
Schmalenberger (Life Sciences department; experimental work) and Prof. Andrew Fowler
(Principal Investigator; mathematical modelling).

В ответ на:

PG1
S/he will conduct an extensive laboratory-based
experimental programme of controlled plant growth, microbial activity and turnover in soil
columns, and in parallel will construct and parameterise a mathematical model combining
theoretical understanding with experimental results. Insights into cycling of phosphorus and sulfur
in a soil-microbe-plant environment will better our understanding of potential environmental risks
in the form of plant nutrient deficiency and groundwater pollution. The student will be required to
interact regularly with national and international collaborators within the research project,
presenting and exchanging results and conclusions of the research.

PG3
S/he will conduct an extensive fieldwork programme instrumenting and
monitoring two on-site domestic wastewater treatment installations, and in parallel will construct
and parameterise a mathematical model combining theoretical understanding with experimental
results. Insights into the development and properties of a microbial biozone due to effluent
percolation in the soil will better our understanding of treatment efficacy, installation design, and
potential environmental risks in the form of groundwater and surface pollution. The student will be
required to interact regularly with national and international collaborators within the research
project, presenting and exchanging results and conclusions of the research.

Requirements
Candidates must have either a good primary degree (1st or 2:1 Honours) or M. Sc. in
Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Life Sciences/Biology, Microbiology, Soil Sciences,
or related discipline, together with an active interest and ability in mathematics, or a good primary
degree (1st or 2:1 Honours) or M. Sc. in Mathematics, Engineering Science, Physical Sciences, or
related discipline, together with documented training in biological or environmental science
laboratory work. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated and be prepared for
laboratory work with modern analytical and molecular equipment. Laboratory experience in basic
soil science (e.g. soil nutrient analysis), microbiology (e.g. cultivation and enumeration) and
molecular biology (e.g. PCR) are of considerable advantage.
Applications
Applications must include a CV and cover letter explaining your interest in the position, to be
emailed simultaneously to andrew.fowler@ul.ie and achim.schmalenberger@ul.ie, including the
reference SFIPI-PG1 in the subject. Applications will continue to be considered until the position is
filled.
