The position:
Current research at CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering is supporting the aim of
achieving energy production from geothermal resources at a scale which will have substantial
impact on the Australian and Worldwide energy supply. This requires a deep understanding of the
fluid-rock interactions that govern the evolution of geothermal reservoirs.
We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to model the coupled interaction
between geothermal reservoir rocks and the fluids that are circulated through them, in order to
produce heat to the surface. The modelling will focus mainly on inclusion of geomechanical
coupling with reservoir geochemistry in a thermodynamics framework that currently includes
thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes. The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-
disciplinary and interactive team, located in sunny, rapidly growing Perth on the south-west coast of
Australia. As part of your research activities, you will have the chance to interact with other
researchers and collaborators across the country.
Specifically you will:
extend the theory of continuum damage mechanics to cover chemically sensitive geo-
materials based on irreversible thermodynamics;
apply the fully coupled framework of multi-physics to predict precipitation and crystallisation
pressure induced fracturing of the reservoir rock;
explore the implications of coupled feedbacks between reactive transport and other
physical processes (mechanical, thermal, and hydrological);
implement the obtained formulations numerically and assess their validities;
collaborate with, and gather knowledge from, a large multi-disciplinary team located across
various sites in Australia.

To be considered you will hold a PhD and have documented research in a relevant discipline (e.g.
mechanics, thermodynamics, geochemistry, applied mathematics, geosciences).

quality peer-reviewed journals;
the ability to formalize and analyse complex real-world interactions in mathematical form;

Postdoctoral position in Exploration and Environmental Geophysics
The Applied and Environmental Geophysics Group at ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology) has an immediate opening for an ambitious and talented scientist at the postdoctoral
or senior researcher level. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years
with the possibility of extension for up to 6-8 years. We invite applicants conducting worldleading
research in areas of applied geophysics including wave-equation based modeling
and inversion methods and/or innovative applications in the field of exploration and
environmental geophysics.
The successful candidate will be expected to (i) initiate and perform his/her own research
projects, (ii) co-supervise undergraduate- and graduate-level thesis projects, and (iii)
contribute to the teaching of applied, engineering and environmental geophysics courses. In
particular, he/she will participate in the teaching of the IDEA League Joint Master's
Programme in Applied Geophysics (http://www.idealeague.org/geophysics). Good
knowledge of English is essential and, although not essential, basic understanding of
German is an advantage. At the time of the appointment, the successful candidate must
have a doctoral degree in geophysics or a related subject.
We can offer a dynamic work-place with access to excellent computational facilities, a broad
range of state-of-the-art geophysical equipment and data. ETH offers world-class high
performance computing (HPC) facilities. In addition, our group owns dedicated HPC

Les shale gas sont des roches sédimentaires très compactes et très peu perméables (entre le nanoDarcy et le microDarcy) contenant du gaz piégé dans la matière organique et dans la porosité. Le gaz migre difficilement à travers une matrice peu perméable et doit être produit par fracturation de ces roches. Le gaz diffuse alors de la matrice vers les fractures et des fractures vers le puits. Cette thèse traite expérimentalement et numériquement des phénomènes de désorption et de migration du gaz à travers la matrice peu perméable.
La partie expérimentale concerne la compréhension des mécanismes de transfert de gaz dans les shales par l'utilisation d'installations existantes, en cours de développement ou à développer. Ces dispositifs auront pour but de caractériser les shales au niveau des mécanismes de perméation, de la porosité accessible au gaz, de la perméabilité relative au gaz, et des mécanismes de diffusion et désorption des gaz.
La partie modélisation sera réalisée en s'appuyant sur l'outil PNM (Pore Network Model) développé à l'origine pour la modélisation des paramètres pétrophysiques (perméabilité, perméabilité relative) de milieux poreux complexes en tenant compte des caractéristiques de la structure poreuse et des mécanismes d'écoulement des fluides à l'échelle du pore. La structure poreuse du milieu sera extraite soit directement à partir des images FIB (PNM déterministe) soit reconstruit d'une manière stochastique (structure équivalente).
Les données expérimentales seront utilisées pour calibrer le PNM qui pourra ensuite fournir les données nécessaires à la prédiction des productions de gaz dans les schistes.

The LHC Theory Initiative is seeking applicants for LHC Graduate and
Postdoctoral Fellowships beginning in 2012 for students and postdocs
involved in LHC-related theoretical research at a US institution.
Graduate fellowship awards are for $40K for a one-year period
(including a fixed $5K administrative fee); postdoctoral fellowships
are for $150K for a two- or three-year period (including a fixed $10K
administrative fee). Funds may be used for stipend/salary, fringe
benefits, tuition, and other research expenses. We anticipate
awarding four graduate and two postdoctoral fellowships in 2012.

Theoretical gravitational physics
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University
invites applications for a faculty position in physics starting in
the fall of 2012. The faculty in the gravity theory group at LSU
consists of Peter Diener, Robert O'Connell, Jorge Pullin, Parampreet
Singh and Gabrielle Allen and Edward Seidel (both on leave at the
National Science Foundation). There is also a quantum information
technology group at LSU led by Jonathan Dowling, a theoretical
astrophysics group led by Juhan Frank and Joel Tohline, and an
experimental gravity group led by Thomas Corbitt, Joe Giaime,
Gabriela Gonzalez and Warren Johnson. The Department has strong
research efforts in particle physics, including nuclear and neutrino
physics, space physics, condensed matter physics, medical physics,
and astronomy and astrophysics.
Preference will be given to candidates working in loop quantum gravity,
but exceptional candidates in other areas of theoretical gravity
will also be considered.
Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

PhD position

Parallel Algorithms for Multiscale Simulations (PAMS).
The candidate will work on the development and theoretical assessment of
parallel algorithms for finite element simulations. We are looking for students
with experience in both theory and practice of parallel programming (message

The GRAPPA (Gravitation AstroParticle Physics Amsterdam) Institute is a new initiative within the Science Faculty of the University of Amsterdam. Launched in October 2011, GRAPPA is a collaboration between the institutes for Theoretical Physics, Astronomy and High Energy Physics (http://uvaapp.nl/). Five new faculty have just been hired: Shin'ichiro Ando, Gianfranco Bertone, Patrick Decowski, Ben Freivogel and Jacco Vink, whose research interests include dark matter, dark energy, neutrinos, and cosmic rays, with a focus on both theoretical modeling of astrophysical source physics as well as (in)direct detection. In addition, there are about 15 affiliated GRAPPA faculty from the collaborating institutes, who are involved in experimental work at Antares/KM3NeT, ATLAS, XENON1T/XENON100, CTA and LOFAR, as well as theory.
We are pleased to announce the creation of the first GRAPPA Postdoctoral Fellowship, and we are currently looking for excellent researchers who would like to work on projects relevant to the GRAPPA interdisciplinary program, either independently or in collaboration with existing members. Candidates should have a background in a field related to astroparticle physics, and they should have obtained their PhD after January 2008 or expect to obtain it by September 2012. The Fellowship appointment will be for 3 years, with a salary set by Dutch labor law, including generous benefit and funds for travel, computers, etc.

Astrophysics
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the area
of computational and theoretical black hole astrophysics including
numerical relativity at the Georgia Tech Center for Relativistic
Astrophysics (CRA). The successful candidate will work with
Dr. Tamara Bogdanovic, who will join the CRA faculty in 2012, and
have opportunity to collaborate with other members of the CRA.
We are particularly interested in a candidate that will work on
interaction of single and binary black holes with their environment,
electromagnetic counterparts and black hole growth. Experience in
running and analyzing parallel (magneto)hydrodynamical simulations
is desired. The successful candidate will receive research and
travel support as well as access to the local high-performance
computing facilities and a new dedicated computer cluster. The
appointment will initially be for two years with a possible
extension to a third year, depending on funding availability and
satisfactory progress. The expected starting date of the position
is September 2012.
Current research interests at the CRA include theoretical topics
in black hole and accretion physics, galaxy formation and cosmology,
numerical relativity, gravitational waves and particle astrophysics.
Center faculty working on these areas include David Ballantyne,
Tamara Bogdanovic, Pablo Laguna (director), Nepomuk Otte, Deirdre

MDIBL is an independent basic and biomedical research and education institution with expertise in the areas of regenerative and developmental biology, cellular stress biology, membrane physiology, comparative and evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, neuroscience, and marine ecology and conservation. Resident and visiting faculty at MDIBL utilize a variety of model systems in their work

The Gravitational Astrophysics Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space
Flight Center and the Maryland Gravitational Wave Theory Group
at the University of Maryland-College Park (UMCP) are seeking
applications for a joint postdoctoral position in gravitational waves,
possibly opening in the Fall of 2012. The position is for one year with
the possibility of renewal for additional years.
This position supports a joint project, led by John Baker (GSFC),
and Alessandra Buonanno (UMCP), to study the performance of
future space-based gravitational-wave instruments in observing binary
black-hole mergers. Competitive applicants should have background
in source modeling, instrument modeling and/or data analysis.
