The laboratory was founded in 1991, when Cellulase Research Group at the Division of Chemical Enzymology, M.V.Lomonosov Moscow State University, received the status of laboratory. From the moment of establishment of the Division of Chemical Enzymology in 1974 by Professor Ilya Berezin, Cellulase Research Group was led by Dr. Anatole Klyosov. Since 1982, Dr. Arkady Sinitsyn has been the head of the Cellulase Research Group.

The major research directions of the laboratory are as follows:

Enzymology, biochemistry and biotechnology of enzymes catalyzing the biodegradation of polysaccharides:

purification and investigation of properties of purified individual enzymes;
development of methods for determination of enzymatic activity;
kinetics of multienzyme systems participating in the hydrolysis of polysaccharides;
study of enzyme adsorption and mechanisms of soluble and insoluble polysaccharide biodegradation;
investigation of the role of transglycosylation in hydrolysis of poly- and oligosaccharides by carbohydrases.

Screening, selection, mutagenesis and development of active microbial strains - producers of acid, neutral and alkaline carbohydrases (in cooperation with Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms, Russian Academy of Sciences):

screening and finding of wild strains;
mutagenesis and development of strains - superproducers of the target enzyme;
optimization of fermentation processes, their scaling up and commercialization.

Enzyme applications in food, textile, pulp and paper industry and as feed additives:

development of laboratory micro- and express-methods modeling the enzyme behavior under real conditions;
enzyme application trials.

List of publications of the laboratory includes 4 books and more than 200 papers in international and national journals.
