Complex Mapping

Integrated Mapping Laboratory is one of the oldest departments of the faculty. Its history began from cartographic department of the Research Institute of Geography created in 1935 on the initiative of A.A. Borzov, N.N. Baransky and V.A. Kamenetskiy. With the transition to the new building of Moscow University on Lenin hills and the elimination of RIG in 1954 the Laboratory of Special and Integrated Mapping as a part of Cartography Department was organized under the direction of E.E. Tsedeler. In connection with the deployment of atlas mapping in 1964 the laboratory was transformed into the Problem Research Laboratory of Integrated Mapping and Atlases.

K.A. Salischev became the scientific leader of the laboratory and the duties of the administrative head were performed by V.S. Zhukova. Later the laboratory was headed by I.N. Guseva, and since 1970 — O.A. Evteev. In 1994, it was renamed to the Integrated Mapping Laboratory.

Since 1995, the laboratory is headed by Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Vladimir S. Tikunov.

Fields of Research

Innovative developments in the field of integrated and branch thematic mapping of natural, socio-economic, political and other phenomena and processes based on recent methodological and scientific-technical achievements (implementation of space research methods, methods of mathematical and cartographic modeling, GIS technology, etc.) and their practical implementation.

Scientific and educational contacts and communications

Our laboratory collaborates with the Institute of Geography Iof Russian Academy of Science (RAS), the institutes of geography in the Far East and Siberian branches of the RAS; the Southern Center of Science of the RAS, the Institute of Water and Environmental Problems of the Siberian branch of the RAS (Barnaul); the Institute of ethnology and anthropology of N.N.Mikluho-Maklaj, Stavropol, Kuban, Pushchinsky and Rostov universities, Smolensk Humanitarian University, Central Europe University (Budapest), Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (China), University of Salzburg (Austria) etc.

International contacts: the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), the International Cartographical Association, the International Geographical Union in the field of Integrated thematic mapping and GIS, in connection with UNEP in the field of ecological mapping.
Since 1994, our laboratory is the organizer of international conference InterCarto / InterGIS --Sustainable Development of Territories: GIS and practical experience. It is the only annual international conference held in Russia in this field. This series of conferences is held within the activities of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) uniting 83 countries of the world and the subjects are often consistent with one of the commissions of the International Geographical Union and the World data system. As speakers in conferences were always invite many prominent scientists and experts from Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia, including the presidents of ICA: D. Morrison (USA), F. Taylor (Canada), M. Wood (UK), M. Konechny (Czech Republic); Secretary generals: F.Ormeling (Netherlands), L. Zentai (Hungary).
