Influence of surface chemistry and pore diameter of modified silicas on exclusion effects in ovalbumin adsorption.

Abstract

Ovalbumin was adsorbed on aerosil and series of silica gels with pore diameter 5, 14, 36 and 50 nm modified with thrimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and aminopropylthriethoxysilane (APTES). Influence of the silicas surface chemistry and electrolyte (NaCl) concentration on exclusion effect in adsorption from 2% isopropanol in 0,02 M phosphate buffer at pH 5,9 was studied. The greatest difference in the adsorption on modified silica gels with the smallest pore diameter 5 nm was observed. At various NaCl concentration the ovalbumin adsorption on the anion-exchange (modified with APTES) silica gel was much more than on the hydrophobic (modified with TMCS) one. Sources of that difference are discussed.
