The paper is dedicated to an analysis of major sociological conceptions of a social institution. These are the theories of H. Spenser, E. Durkheim, M. Weber, T. Parsons, P. Berger, N. Lukmann and also of Russian sociologists V. Dobrenkov and A. Kravchenko. The analysis reveals the analytical and practical importance of Weberian tradition, its role in contemporary sociological approaches to the problem of social institution.
