Prior to Kuhn, Merton developed a metadiscursive concept of analytical paradigm, which carries out notational, constructionist-preventive, cumulativebasic, analytical, and research codification functions. Merton's analytical paradigm precluded, if not superseded, Lakatos' methodology of research programs. Merton's advocacy of inner and interdisciplinary pluralism opposes Kuhn's scientific monism and Feyrabend's methodological anarchism.
