Russian TeX for PC
Warning! this version is obsolete, please use updated version: RusTeX
Old russian version (koi8): OldRusTeX
First of all, sorry for broken english. English is not my native tongue.
For impatient users: You can download RusTeX in three different ways (Full installation; Selective download; Diskette-ready minimal installation) --- so at least read explanations about these methods before you download something.
Please, use "Save link as" (right mouse button) for downloading files, otherwise .arj files and other binary files will be corrupted.
What is TeX
TeX is the standard system for scientific typesetting. TeX is portable (DOS/Windows, OS/2, UNIX, VMS, etc). TeX files are compact and readable in any text viewer: just text and commands for formatting and commands for equations drawing. All scientific preprint libraries (for example xxx.lanl.gov) and most scientific journals accept papers in TeX (or LaTeX, or AMSTeX, or other additional macros over TeX).
But.
To use TeX you must know TeX language (TeX commands). If you really know TeX, it is much more efficient then any other typesetting system (M$Word, for example). You get nice text and equations and do it much faster, then in any other system. But if you know nothing, you get nothing (in contrast with M$Word, where you can get something even starting it for the first time).
Copyleft
I'm not the author of this system. This is a part of EmTeX (by Eberhard Mattes) with some additions. E.M. insist on full redistribution of his files. To make him happy (I really want to make him happy: I think, that his system is the best TeX realization in PC-world) I give the reference to full EmTeX release: EmTeX
I just install EmTeX, explain him what is russian language, add some useful tools (especially Window previewer dviwin by Hippocrates Sendoukas), install additional fonts and macros, write a one-touch batch programm (TeX menu) and delete files, that are useless at our environment. Anyone can do it.
So why I prepared this installation?
Because when TeX system was installed at our LAN I've got a problem. Many peoples, that can use already working TeX, but don't understand (and don't want to understand) internal TeX processes, ask me how to copy this system to their home PC. They needn't full installation. They don't want to generate FMT files or fonts. They just want small working TeX. So (this is just a self-defence) I prepared this TeX installation complect. Strictly speaking it is not an installation, it is just a programm, that (I hope) explain what parts of full installation you need and then unpack them to your disk.
Many peoples ask me: where is windowed WYSIWYG TeX, that draw keywords in different colors, that permit to draw equations with mouse as WinWord do, etc. Well, I don't like window editors (and especially WinWord). In any text editor I type any TeX equation two or three times faster, then in Word-like environment. So, it is my favorite TeX installation: comfortable, compact and fast. If you don't like it, please, go to CTAN (ftp.dante.de and mirrors listed therein) and get TeX system which you prefer.
Full installation
If you have no problems with free disk space and download speed, just get self-extracting archive
Extract it, read install.eng (in English) or install.rus (in Russian) and start install.exe.
Selective download
Installation programm and arj.exe: install.exe (63 Kb) arj.exe (116 Kb)
Readme files. English version: install.eng (9 Kb) Russian version: install.rus (10 Kb)
And then select what you need:
This is the base part of TeX (and LaTeX) package. If you want minimal-size installation, some of files can be removed (see readme). Besides this part, you need fonts: 180 or 240 or 300 or 360 or 600. Alternatively (not recommended) you can install Metafont (see readme).
Fonts for Epson LQ (and compatible) printers. All 24-pin printers, that understand Epson commands can work with these fonts. Fonts are 180x180DPI (dot per inch). Fonts provide medium-quality, but fast printing. (360x180DPI fonts provide slightly better quality, but slow printing).
Fonts for Epson LX,FX,MX (and compatible) printers. All 9-pin printers, that understand Epson commands, can work with these fonts. Fonts are 240x216DPI (dot per inch). Fonts provide the highest quality, that is possible on 9-pin printers.
Fonts for HP LaserJet, DeskJet (and compatible) printers. All printers, that understand PCL language can work with these fonts. Fonts are 300x300DPI (dot per inch). Fonts provide quite enough quality. I don't think, that 600x600DPI fonts are much better, but you can try them.
Fonts for Epson LQ (and compatible) printers. All 24-pin printers, that understand Epson commands can work with these fonts. Fonts are 360x180DPI (dot per inch). Fonts provide the highest quality, that is possible on 24-pin printers, but rather slow printing.
Fonts for HP LaserJet, DeskJet (and compatible) printers. All printers, that understand PCL language and support 600DPI mode can work with these fonts. Fonts are 600x600DPI (dot per inch). Large fonts and slow printing. Try them, if you want, instead of 300DPI fonts.
Metafont --- font generation utility. Almost all (see readme) standard fonts at all standard resolutions are ready, so you needn't install it. But if you want to generate some non-standard fonts (or resolution), or need dynamic font generation (see readme), install it.
This is additional TeX and LaTeX packages: AmsTeX, AmsLateX (for LaTeX209 and LaTeX2e), RevTex (for LaTeX209 and LaTeX2e)
Some tools, that are useful, but not necessary. Some of them are part of emtex, some --- from other sources. Huge TeX support (see readme).
Tools for experts. Documentation, sources, utilities, additional metafont sources (for russian users these fonts are useless). If you are so clever, you can install TeX yourself and explain him what is russian language too.
When (and if) you download what you need, read one of readme files and start install.exe.
Diskette-ready minimal installation
If you have 386 (or higher) computer and need no additional tools and macros (just (La)TeX), you can download the following minimal versions, depending on your printer (if you have no printer, use smallest version --- for 24-pin Epson-compatible):
For 24-pin Epson-compatible:
min180.arj (1440 Kb) min180.a01 (1440 Kb) min180.a02 (1440 Kb) min180.a03 (1440 Kb) min180.a04 (1440 Kb) min180.a05 (1440 Kb) min180.a06 (1440 Kb) min180.a07 (1440 Kb)
For 9-pin Epson-compatible:
min240.arj (1440 Kb) min240.a01 (1440 Kb) min240.a02 (1440 Kb) min240.a03 (1440 Kb) min240.a04 (1440 Kb) min240.a05 (1440 Kb) min240.a06 (1440 Kb) min240.a07 (1440 Kb) min240.a08 (1440 Kb)
For HP LaserJet or DeskJet and compatible:
min300.arj (1440 Kb) min300.a01 (1440 Kb) min300.a02 (1440 Kb) min300.a03 (1440 Kb) min300.a04 (1440 Kb) min300.a05 (1440 Kb) min300.a06 (1440 Kb) min300.a07 (1440 Kb) min300.a08 (1440 Kb) min300.a09 (1440 Kb) min300.a10 (1440 Kb)
Then create directory (the best choice is c:\emtex), copy archive files to it and say
arj x -v -y min180.arj
I think you have arj, but for any case: arj.exe (116 Kb)
To start TeX menu for your TeX file myfile.tex, say:
c:\emtex\twb myfile.tex
