All-army olimpiad

The XIV All-army Olympiad in Informatics took place from April 21, 2014 to April 25, 2014. The staff of the Lomonosov Moscow State University contributed to the design of the Olympiad assignments and its organization. For the second time since its launch, the Olympiad was held in the city of Penza at the Penza branch of the Military Academy of Material and Technical Security named after the General of the Army A. Khrulev.

The main prize represented a challenge cup. Competitors included 25 student teams from military education institutions from across the country, such as Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Smolensk, Penza, Voronezh, Cherepovets, Krasnodar, Blagoveshchensk and many other cities.

Soldiers from military science companies, students from military chairs of civil higher education institutions as well as students from military education institutions located in CIS (Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan) were accepted to participate at the Olympiad without pre-selection.

Overall, 150 participants (both male and female), team members and student supervisors attended the Olympiad. The Olympiad contest lasted for three days. In the first day, contestants had to demonstrate their skills in manipulating the Microsoft Office suite software (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft PowerPoint). In the second day, they had to programme the solutions to some computational and tactical problems using such programming languages as C, Pascal and Basic. The third day represented a team competition which required solving a military problem using the Microsoft Office suite software and the MathCad programming software.

According to the results of the Olympiad, the team of the Olympiad hosts became winners. Among the civil higher education institutions of the Russian Federation, the best performance was demonstrated by the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. Among all teams representing CIS countries, the Minsk team showed the best results. Moreover, outstanding results were demonstrated by students from the Mozhaisky Military Space Academy (Saint-Petersburg) and the Military Education and Science Centre of the Zhukovsky-Gagarin Air Force Academy (Voronezh).

Given the successful participation experience of teams from CIS and the extension of the geographical coverage of the Olympiad, it has been decided that next year this Olympiad will officially become an international competition. However, its unique format will be preserved.
