The International Workshop
"LOCAL TSUNAMI WARNING AND MITIGATION"
(in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1952 Great Kamchatka Earthquake and Tsunami)

Organized jointly by the IUGG Tsunami Commission (IUGG/TC) and the International Co-ordination Group for the Tsunami Warning System in the Pacific (UNESCO/IOC/ICG/ITSU)

All pre registered participants and accompanying persons who are not Russian citizens will receive official invitations in order to obtain a visas.

Field Trips
During Field Trips, participants will be acquainted with tsunami manifestation sites on the Pacific coast of Kamchatka and the most interesting geological sections showing key marker tephra layers and a tsunami deposits from prehistorical and historical events (including tsunami 1952 Kamchatka tsunami deposits).
Notice please!
All the Field Trips are one day trips. Helicopter trips are strongly depended on the very changeable Kamchatka weather. It is recommended for all participants who wish to take part in helicopter trips and volcano climbing to have warm waterproof wear (and footwear).
Provisional places to be visited (east coast of Kamchatka):
- Khalaktirka beach and Kotelnoe lake (bus; free for registered participants and accompanying persons)
- Mouth of Zupanovo river - Kronotsky bay (helicopter, $100)
- Mouth of Vahil’ - Osernaya river (helicopter, $100)
We also suggest a few “non-tsunami” field trips:
- Avacha volcano climbing (personal equipment required: tracking shoes, waterproof warm wear ($10)
- Valley of Geysers (helicopter, $100)
- Karimsky volcano; eruption is under way now (helicopter, $100)
Workshop Proceedings
The selected papers will be published in the Proceedings volumes in English and Russian. Manuscripts (in English up to 10 pages including black & white figures, 1.5 line spacing, Times New Roman 12) should be submitted electronically not later than 30 Sep 2002.
