The Europolymer Conferences
In 1998, the EPF decided to organize a series of Europolymer Conferences (EUPOCs) on topics of recent scientific and industrial interest. These Conferences, limited to 100 participants, take place in Gargnano on Lake Garda at the Palazzo Feltrinelli, kindly offered by the University of Milan. The scientific program consists of invited lectures, oral communications and posters. Ample time is given to free discussions, encouraged by the residential style of the Conference Venue. Scope & Objectives
There is a recent confluence of fundamental research and development work being conducted on porous polymeric systems by a variety of very different research communities. A large number of innovative routes to myriad porous polymeric systems have been explored, generating new materials with wide-ranging technological applicability. As the need for porous polymers with more complex structures and functions has increased, so has the ability to synthesize such systems with tuneable mechanical properties, well-defined pore sizes, pore wall functionalities, and controlled pore size distributions and interconnectivities. Moreover, such polymers can be generated with inherent microporosity (subnanometer-scale pores) or with templated macroporosity (micrometer-scale pores). The recent advances extend beyond the ability to synthesize novel porous polymers. These new materials challenged the capabilities of standard characterization methodologies. In response, innovative characterization methodologies were developed to provide insight into the porous structures and their effects on the material's properties. In addition, these porous polymers are being used as templates for the production of porous ceramics and other materials. The objective of this Conference is to bring together the various disparate communities that work on porous polymers. These communities include those working on the development of materials for membranes, catalysis, absorption, microelectronics, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and lightweight materials. The Conference will present topics with similar underlying themes that originate in a variety of research areas with very different perspectives. Thus, for example, work on microporous membranes will be of interest to those working on microporous polymers for the microelectronics industry. The Conference will include sessions on the design of microporous, mesoporous, and macroporous polymers, on their characterization and properties, and on their application in various fields. This will be one of the rare occasions that a conference focuses upon the wide spectrum of topics related to porous polymer research and development.
