Euopean Polymer Federation

The Europolymer Conferences
Startin g from 1998 EPF has decided to organize a series of Europolymer Conferences (EUPOCs) on topics of act ual scientific and in dustrial interest. That taking place in Gargn ano on Lake Garda is a Conference lim ited to 100 part icipants, the venue being the Palazz o Feltrinelli kin dly offered by the University of Milan . The scientif ic program con sists of invited lectures, oral comm unicat ion s and posters. Ample space is given to free discussion fav ored by the residential style of the Conference. The titles of recent E UPOCs are: Poly mers in Nan oscience and Nan otechnology (EUPOC 2005) Bran ched Macrom olecular Struct ures (E UPOC 2006) From Polym er Struct ure an d Rheology t o Process Modeling (EUPOC 2007) Adv anced Polymeric Materials for the Energy Resources Exploitation (E UPOC 2008) · "Click"-Methods in Polymer and Materials Science (E UPOC 2009) · Hierarchically Struct ured Polym ers (EUPOC 2010) · · · ·

Scope & Objectives
The im port ance of biobased and closely conn ected biorelated polym ers goes without say ing; traditional raw mat erials from non-renewable resources will be gone sooner or later in evitably . Recent disasters when less conventional methods have been used for crude oil extraction clearly in dicate that product ion of biorelated raw m aterials is also safer. It is not h owever generally appreciated that the level of the world production of sugar, being in surplus in many parts of the world, is comparable w ith the world production of poly mers. It may also be stressed that sucrose is the cheapest ch emical raw material. However, the num ber of publish ed w ork s related to biobased polymers is by far lower than the number of papers dev oted to poly olefins an d v inyl polym ers. The field of biobased poly mers in all the involved areas is still in its infancy . This is even true for the bacterial polyesters that, although developed a long time ago, are n ot yet produced in f ull scale mostly f or econ omical reasons. Poly lact ides the most successf ul amon g the biobased polym ers are produced at a very m inor level of the t otal production of polymers. Biorelated polymers are bringing also an addit ion al value, n amely degradability. On the other h and, polymeric biom aterials and their potential in different fields, mainly biology and biom edicine, are in an adv anced state, but y et ex pan ding in scope an d impact. Thus, the aims of this Conferen ce are to review the present state of research in the area of biobased/biorelated polym ers, and to provide a forum for discussion of future progress and prospect. Ch emistry, phy sics and application of biobased/biorelated polym ers an d polym eric biomaterials w ill be covered. The Conference w ill also celebrate Professors Em o Ch iellini and Francesco Ciardelli on the occasion of their retirement. We are happy that both of them kin dly agreed to give lectures.
