Summary
The article is devoted to the development of the petroleum sector in the Norwegian economy. Special attention is paid to the different periods of the industry's development, marked by different strategies of government regulation in the sector and specific events on the world oil market. The article shows the influence of petroleum industry on the national economy of Norway, social sector and the political situation in this Scandinavian country. The author analyzes cooperation between national entities and foreign petroleum companies, and the role of government policies in structuring this cooperation. In general, the major factor in Norwegian petroleum history is the active role of the state, though the development of the world petroleum market also exercises an important role. It is argued that the example of the Norwegian petroleum industry demonstrates the effectiveness of governmental participation in production on the continental shelf.
