Indigenous to Moluccas, the Spice Islands of Indonesia

Now also grown in Brazil, the West Indies, Mauritius,

Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, Zanzibar and Pemba. Largest Production area currently is the island Pemba, which is covered with clove gardens.


Tree is a Perennial

Cloves grow best in loamy wet soils.
Prefer partial shade and even rainfall. Cloves grow best in warm tropical temperatures. Pollinated by fruits that fall on the ground. Harvested when f lowers turn from yellow/green to

pink/purple.

are plucked and sun dried. Known for it's characteristic fragrance when blooming.

Cloves were first used by humans in China dating back






to 207 B.C. People held them in their mouths while talking to the emperor to mask bad breath. Reached Europe as a spice in the 4th century A.D. Around 17-18 Century A.D. the Dutch monopolized Clove trade, but the French later entered the trade in the 19th Century. Cloves still used in kitchens and for small tooth aches today.
