The Roles of Context, Culture and Representations in Physics Teaching & Learning
It is the only city which bridges two geographic continents... Istanbul has long been known as the capital of the capital cities. Roman Empire, Eastern Roman (Byzantium) Empire the Ottoman Empire reigned here for centuries. The city is now going into a modern future with preserving its magnificent history with proud. Variety in Istanbul is really charming for the visitors. It is serving infinite nuances with its museums, churches, palaces, mosques, bazaars and natural wonders. When you lean back on the coast of the strait, you feel Istanbul as "the center of the world" and understand why people have selected this extraordinary place ages ago by watching the reflection of the red at sunset from the house windows at the coast. We are looking forward to seeing physics educators, teachers, researchers, and policy makers from around the world in this very first World Conference on Physics Education to be held in Istanbul in July 2012. The conference is supported by the following three international organizations: Groupe International de Recherche sur l'Enseignement de la Physique (GIREP) International Commission on Physics Education (ICPE) Commission 14 of the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), and American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT ). We also expect further support from other related international institutions and agencies. The 2012 World Conference on Physics Education will be modeled on the Physics Education segment of World Conference on Physics and Sustainable Development ( WCPSD), Durban in 2005, co-sponsored by ICTP, IUPAP, UNESCO, and SAIP. This conference followed a participative and consultative process to develop action plans to strengthen physics education at all levels in all countries. The action plans, endorsed by all sponsors, mandated development of model workshops and resource materials for physics teachers and teacher trainers that exemplify how active learning methods can be adapted to meet the needs of students in developing countries; and further, mechanisms for electronic sharing of high quality physics education resources by establishing a website. Our commission was entrusted with implementation of some of these plans. It is gratifying to record that we have made progress in this direction by launching the PHYSWARE series of Educate the Educator workshops that use low-cost and appropriate technologies to promote active learning. The 2012 World Conference on Physics Education will be a concrete step forward in global cooperation. Envisaged as a series of conferences with a four year periodicity, it would be a working conference with follow-up actions that presumably would carry over to the following conference.
