Department of Oceanology

Had been founded in 1953 on initiative of well-known Arctic explorer, Honoured Scientist and Engineer of RSFSR professor Nikolai Nikolaevich Zubov
The Department was headed by professors A.D.Dobrovolsky (1953-1987), O.I.Mamaev (1988-1994), S.S.Lappo (1994-2006)
The corresponding member of RAS (Russian Academy of Sciences), doctor of geography professor Sergei Anatolievich Dobrolubov is at the head of the Department since 2006

Teaching and scientific staff

Professors: Corresponding member of RAS S.A.Dobrolubov (water masses, ocean and atmosphere interaction), corresponding member of RAS S.K.Gulev (ocean and atmosphere interaction), academician of RAS A.S.Sarkisian (sea currents theory);

Senior lecturers: V.S.Arhipkin (sea water physical properties, coastal oceanography, data processing), A.N.Pantiulin (hydrology of seas, the foundations of hydrobiology, fishing oceanology), A.V.Poliakova (hydrochemistry, marine ecology, biochemistry of shelf waters), T.V.Samborsky (stochastic modeling of hydrological processes in the south seas of Russia);

Senior scientific assistants: A.T.Kondrin (wave motions and coastal waters dynamics), A.N.Demidov (water masses and long-term variability of hydrologic parameters in Atlantic ocean), S.A.Myslenkov (wave modeling, coastal currents );

Senior teacher: S.S.Mukhametov (regional oceanography, sea ice, resources of the oceans and their usage);

Educational master V.L.Lebedev (sea currents, boundary surfaces in the ocean, regional oceanography);

Scientific assistants: F.N.Gippius (wind waves, wave climate and its variability);

Engineers: M.G.Deev (ocean acoustics, sea ice, history of geographic discoveries), N.S.Perlova, V.Yu.Berezhnoy.

The type of graduated specialists – oceanologist. The Department graduates work in all home organizations associated with ocean investigations, as well as in many foreign oceanologic bodies.

The basic educational courses – oceanology (physicochemical properties of water, mixing, waves, tides, level variations, sea currents, sea ice, water masses), hydrochemistry, ocean and atmosphere interaction, ocean circulation models, satellite oceanology, rational employment of nature and protection of atmosphere and hydrosphere resources. At the final stage of education special courses are given on the most topical problems of present-day oceanology. After the second year, students take instructional practice in the South Branch of the RAS Institution of Oceanology (Gelendjik). The students of the higher courses take practical training in RF marine science institutions and laboratories obtaining experiences for practical work at sea.

Lines of scientific investigations – structure, dynamics and ecological condition of the ocean and sea waters.

Principal completed investigations. The work is completed on modeling of the World Ocean climatic characteristics. New results have been obtained related to estimation of inter-annual variability of water masses, heat and fresh water transportation in the North Atlantic. Mean velocities of advection of temperature and salinity anomalies in the North Atlantic have been defined. The factors have been revealed making up global water circulation between oceans. Data bases have been created: for Caspian Sea – hydrological and hydrochemical observations in the second half of the XX century involving more than 70 thousands of oceanologic stations; for Black Sea – about 60 thousands stations with thermohaline observations. The package of original computer programs have been developed for calculation and simulation of principal processes making up condition and variability of inland seas hydrological structure. New results have been obtained on hydrology of Caspian and Black Seas and the reasons of current changes under influence of atmospheric agents and river discharge have been evaluated. Principal features of water dynamics and thermohaline structure of Caspian Sea have been examined during periods of high and low level position. Hydrological characteristics of the North Caspian shelf areas and the Black Sea north-western part have been studied revealing their seasonal and inter-annual variability depending on Volga and Danube rivers discharge, water circulation pattern, level fluctuation (Caspian). The over-all evaluation of the Black Sea and Caspian Sea shelf areas pollution influence has ascertained that the changes of ecosystems of the Caspian and Black Seas in the last 60 years are identical.

Perspective investigations – the study of ocean impact on regional climate changes, generalization of the results of ocean climate and hydrological processes in Russian Seas researches in XX century, development of methodological foundations for marine ecological monitoring, creating and replenishment of data banks using net resources, acquisition of up-to-date instruments for oceanographic measurements to ensure high-performance work at sea.

Scientific and educational relations and contacts – RAS Institution of Oceanology, RAS Institution of Calculating Mathematics, Institutions of State Committee on Hydrometeorology, Marine Hydrophysical Institution (Sevastopol) and other bodies.

International relations – training of students, post-graduate students, masters and doctors of sciences from foreign countries, cooperation with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (USA), Institute of Oceanography in Southampton and Marine Biological Laboratory in Plymouth (England), Federal Marine Hydrographic Agency in Hamburg (Germany), Institution of Oceanology of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Varna, of NAS (Ukraine), University Montevideo (Uruguay).
