Department of Geography of World Economy

Prof. Vladimir A. Kolosov

The department acquired this name in 1991 in response to the crucial changes in the country’s life that occurred at the turn of 1980s – 1990s. By embarking on the path of introducing market relations and creating democratic institutions, Russia began to integrate more fully into the world economy and the international community. This led to the need to study the spatial organization of the world economy, geopolitics, the geography of international economic relations, regional integration of states and other relevant topics.
At the same time the department is the successor to its predecessors, the Department of Economic Geography of Foreign Countries established at the Soil-Geographical Faculty of Moscow University in 1934, and the later Department of Economic Geography of Socialist Countries. From these units the Department inherited its staff and traditions.

The research and teaching team at various times was headed by Prof. Ivan A. Vitver (1943-55), Associate Prof. Piotr I. Glushakov (1955-59), Prof. Isaak M. Maergoyz (1959), Associate Prof. Ivan H. Ovdienko (1960-67), Board Member of USSR Academy of Science Oleg T. Bogomolov (1967-77), Prof. Nikolay V. Alisov (1978-91), Prof. Nikolay S. Mironenko (1991 2015). Since March 2015 the Department has been headed by Prof. Vladimir A. Kolosov.
