If the oil pressure monitoring system does not see the proper amount of oil pressure to lubricate and protect the engine it will illuminate the light and sound the light and sound the warning. This is a "fail safe" system, so if a sensor was to fail it would also trigger a warning. It "may" be a switch or wiring problem, but it could also be an oil pressure problem. I recommend you get it checked out as soon as possible. The oil pressure should be checked and the warning system tested. If it only comes on after driving for a period of time, this would indicate a possible mechanical problem. If the engine is not making any new, excessive, "ticking" or "clacking" noises it is likely safe to drive. To do so the oil pressure sending unit is removed and the gauge hose is installed in it’s place. Oil pressure at idle: 2.0 bar minimum Oil pressure at 2000 rpm: 3.0 to 4.5 bar If the pressures were lower, this would indicate an internal engine problem, possibly the bearing surfaces are excessively worn. Or there could be a leak at one of the seals for the oil pump or pick up tube. If it was low (more than 1 quart), you need to find out where the oil went. If it was not low, your back to the above described and it needs to be checked out. There are a number of mechanical problems that could account for low oil pressure, sludge being one of them. If you can better/best describe the condition, as well as anything else that has been done to try and correct the issue. Also a time line of the events that led to the condition would be quite helpful.
