Cloud Provider Amazon Web Services Launches Edge Location in Sydney
Cloud services provider Amazon Web Services announced on Tuesday that it has opened a new edge location in Sydney, Australia. According to a blog post by Amazon, the decision to deploy a new edge location to Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53 was based on customer request and feedback it received from a survey.
This news comes a as longtime Microsoft executive Tom Rizzo has jumped ship to AWS to head up its EC2 division as general manager.
Jeff Barr, senior web services evangelist, AWS, says that the new Sydney location will provide its customers with increased performance and reduced latency. Sydney is the 33rd edge location, according to Barr.
In March, The Register reported that AWS was looking to hire in Australia, which it suggested could lead to an increase in its presence in the area. Last year, reports surfaced that AWS may open up to three data centers in Sydney. AWS entered the Australian market in April 2010 when it began offering cloud services from its Singapore hub.
Cloud providers that offer CDN services in Australia, or have a presence in data centers such as Equinix, will want to watch what Amazon does to expand in the area. According to the Equinix website, Sydney is an important financial center in the Asia Pacific region and its data centers are strategically located near the Central Business District, with access to Southern Cross Cable Head.

The CloudFront Sydney location supports all of the CloudFront features including support for dynamic content, low minimum content expiration periods, and streaming media.
Last week, AWS announced some changes to its support costs, including a free basic support tier offered to all of its customers.
