FBI Likely Behind New Malware That Attacks Tor Anonymity

If this information is correct, the code could potentially be the first sample discovered as part of the FBI law enforcement spyware and internet protocol address verifier.CIPAV is a software the FBI can distribute through a browser flaw to obtain information from the target machine and deliver it to a Virginia based FBI server, according to court documents and FBI files released under the FOIA.Since 2002, the FBI has used the software CIPAV in investigations against hackers, online sexual predators, and extortionists, mostly to pinpoint suspects who are using proxy servers or anonymity services to hide their location.Despite being in practice for more than a decade, CIPAV is used by the FBI sparingly, successfully preventing it from being leaked out and analyzed, or added to anti virus databases. These websites can only be found over the Tor anonymity network.Eric Eoin Marques, who owned and operated the Freedom Hosting service inside the Tor network, is currently beingheld without bail in Ireland.The service isbelieved to be one of the largest operators within Tor, providing popular privacy tools such as TorMail.On Saturday, Marques had a preliminary US extradition trial, where he faced charges of distributing child pornography online.In the past, the service has allegedly hosted up to95 percent of the network child pornography, and in 2011, the Anonymous collective warned the service to cease these practices.Shortly after his arrest last week, all of the hidden service websites hosted by Freedom Hosting were redirected to a disclaimer that read, for Maintenance, including those websites that did not contain or relate to child pornography in any way.
