N. Alekseev, the Mayor of Moscow, in the Diaries and Memoirs of his Contemporaries

Nikolai Alekseev (1852–1893) was a famous merchant, tradesman and philanthropist, who headed public administration of Moscow in 1885–1893. During his tenure as a mayor, the city administration gained a lot of valuable experience, some of which is still relevant today. The article is based on the diaries and memoirs of contemporaries and examines Alekseev’s personality and his activities as the head of Moscow city public administration. The author presents a summary of appearance, character, business qualities, mayor’s surroundings, his relationship with the supreme power, as well as some other important and interesting aspects of N. Alekseev’s life.
