Organization and Proceeding of Strategic War Games of Russia's General Staff 1906-1914

The article reconstructs the organization of strategic war games of Russia’s General Staff in 1906–1914. It analyzes basic regulations, characterizes main maps which were used in war games, and estimates the influence of contemporary military thought upon war gaming. The author comes to conclusion, that the organization of war games in the Russian Empire was highly developed. A war game could simulate troops’ movements and every action preceding the engagement. In the early 20th century it became an important instrument of tactical and operational training and testing of war plans.
