The article examines the results of sociological studies of social groups that provide the basis for the forming of middle class in modern Russia. The author describes their characteristics, identity, perception of their own social role and attitudes towards the government and its efficiency. These characteristics create risks and opportunities in the sphere of interaction between the government and the active social groups. Attributes and attitudes of these social groups determine potential features of the developing Russian middle class: high social activity, a specific vision, an urge to participate in social and political life. The author also offers her own interpretation of the results of a qualitative analysis.
