Transformation of soils solutions under air pollution impact.
Adsorption of heavy metals by soils in batch experiments.
Movement of heavy metals in undisturbed soil columns.
Composition of soil solutions as a key in monitoring of soil remediation.
Prediction of soil solution changes in response to soil contamination and rehabilitation with dynamic bigeochemical models.
The project aims to study, both theoretically
and experimentally, response of
soil solutions to contamination/remediation of soils by/from heavy metals.
The main attention is paid to contaminated soils in the vicinity of the major
emitters of heavy metals in northern Europe - the nickel-copper smelters
Pechenganikel and Severonikel in the Kola Peninsula. Both soil solution and
solid phase chemistry will be analysed to get inside the soil transformation
under pollution impact. Key processes determining heavy metal
partitioning in soils and soil solutions
will be studied both in field and laboratory experiments. The influence of
soil texture, organic matter and pH on metal sorption, mobility and
bioavailability will be estimated. For comparison, a large number of forest
soils with different texture, mineralogy and chemistry were investigated in
the taiga zone of European Russia. Long-term response of soils solutions to
different deposition scenarios and remediation will be evaluated.
