Investigations of protected territories, particularly the National Park "Smolenskoye Poozer'ye", the unique natural ecosystem, have a great importance from the point of view of biological diversity conservation. During 1999-2002 the vegetation and soils were studied in the Park territory. The main plant communities (forests, meadows, bogs) were characterised. The history of the forest and bog formation was studied with the help of palinological analysis and botanical analysis of peat. The book includes the data in rare plant species, divided into four groups depending on their rarity and danger of disappearance. The main patterns and features of soil cover are revealed. Soil ecological quality in forest ecosystems is assessed on the base of detailed soil chemistry. Relationships between soil variables and phytocenosis diversity are analysed. Methodology and methods of ecological monitoring are discussed.
For specialists in ecology, forestry, botany, soil science.
