The Faculty of Philology, Moscow Lomonosov State University, has earned the reputation of the leading expert on teaching Russian as a foreign language due to its long-term activity in the field. This direction of studies has been developing since 1947 not only to establish strong academic traditions, but also to work out a truly reliable and effective methodology. Currently, there are 4 departments specialising in the field ? the Department of Russian Language for Foreign Students at the Faculty of Philology, the Department of Russian for Foreign Students in the Humanities, the Department of Russian for Foreign Students in the Natural Sciences, the Department of Didactic Linguistics and Theory of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language at the Faculty of Philology and 2 administrative units: the International Office at the Faculty of Philology and the International Summer School (the International Russian Language Courses at the Faculty of Philology, MSU).

The International Russian Language Courses provide group and individual tuition to students on all levels (from complete beginners to advanced learners). Classes are offered:

  • on a short-term basis, traditionally covering a period of 2-10 weeks;
  • on a semester basis;
  • a full-year programme.

As an alternative, a more flexible approach tailored to the student?s individual needs is also a possibility.

The main principle in devising the programmes has been to cater for the students? needs as much as possible. Our standard programmes invariably include all the primary fundamental aspects of systematic learning of Russian, i.e. practical classes in Phonetics, Intonation, Vocabulary, Grammar (on all levels) as well as classes aimed at developing and improving the participants? oral communication skills. Students are also offered various special courses covering a wide range of professional topics (the Russian Language, Russian Literature, Translation, Methods of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language, etc) and special seminars focusing on general philological subjects (?Aspects of the Russian Verb?, ?Verbal and Nominal Ways of Word-Formation in Russian?) and providing links to other humanitarian disciplines (culture, society, politics), such as, for instance, ?History of Russian Art?, ?Russian Music?, ?Russian Folklore?, ?History and Politics?.

On completion of the course, the participants will receive an official certificate from the Faculty of Philology, Moscow Lomonosov State University, indicating the type and length of the course attended.

A rich and varied cultural programme (organized in May-August) includes sightseeing tours around Moscow and its environs; visits to theatres and museums.

In order to apply for the course, the following documents are to be submitted:

  • a completed application form (the form can be downloaded at http://www.philol.msu.ru/~leto/anketa-rus.pdf)
